I
have been wanting to go to the Canyon since it opened and it took all
these years and my 19th Leap Year all month celebration eating out in
restaurants to get me there.
Read their web site and in no uncertain terms they tell you no reservations and give you their dress code.
They
open at 5:30 and this evening (Wednesday) there were 4 parties waiting
to go in. Though I don't like eating that early neither do I like
waiting on line so we were one of the parties waiting. They specialize in 'Southwestern food'.
The service
was fine except for poor judgment on the server's part but that may have
been because of house rules. A warm roll, the size of a regular dinner
roll, was given to be split between the 2 of us and you can tell looking
at us that we are eaters. She did bring a couple of more rolls when we
asked.
We
both had specials with Allen ordering the pork tenderloin ($28) which
he said was very tender and a bit spicy. I had the seafood special ($36)
which was a very small, extremely spicy, (and I like spicy food but
this overpowered the fish, shrimp, scungil, etc.) take off on
bouillabaisse.
Allen
had his usual coke ($3.50) and the server was very generous with
refills. I stayed with water, wanting to reach my goal of 10 glasses a
day. Once again the server was on the spot with refills.
I
had heard about their bread pudding, which I thought was made with
chocolate but was wrong. We split the bread pudding, served with
blueberries, strawberries and blackberries, after that suggestion by,
who we assumed was, the owner. At $13 it was very overpriced though it
was very good and we each could have had our own serving.
The check, with tip and tax, came to $101.33.
The
service was just short of excellent while the food was more of a chef
showing off than the best being served though the ingredients were the
best.
I'm glad I finally made it to Canyon but I don't see myself
going back, especially when not celebrating my Leap Year birthday nor
can I see myself recommending the restaurant.
It was good but should have been better.

Ironically, of all the restaurants
I ate in during my Leap Year celebration the worst were the 2 most
expensive: Morton's and Canyon--maybe I expected too much from both?
