The Adjustment Bureau--a Movie Review

Imagine
my surprise when instead of a shoot em up action movie I found a good,
interesting, fun love story in the forefront! There is excellent
chemistry between Matt Damon and Emily Blunt as a couple falling and
being in love and because of that having to go on the run from 'the men
in the hats'.

Matt is an everyman actor
who can be convincing in blue or white collar roles and here he is a
rising politician, a favorite to win an election and loses it because of
an old picture of him mooning a group of people, but not before he has
an encounter with Blunt in a men's room--no, not that kind of an
encounter. She is on the verge of major stardom as a ballet dancer and
choreographer---seems ballet dancers are in style this movie year. They
kiss and due to circumstances, maybe, she disappears and it is a couple
of years before he bumps into her on a bus which is a no-no as they were
destined to go on other paths and once again they are separated.

This
brings us back to the men in the hats. They seem to be puppet masters
whose job is to see that people follow the path that is set for them and
when they don't the adjustment bureau men--doesn't seem like there are
any women at the bureau--come in and make adjustments. They warn David (Damon) he has to stay away Elise (Blunt) and that if he doesn't they will erase his brain.

Are
they divine? Angels? Is 'the chairman' G-d? Do they control destinies?
Is it all a conspiracy? Are they against love? They, anyone, can see
that Elise and Davis are meant for each other, are good for each other,
so why do the men in the hats don't want then together, why do they keep
them apart for years?

Elise has no idea
what is happening and when David disappears another time she is so
deeply hurt that she turns to her ex-fiancee and decides to marry him.

Oh,
did I tell you that when the men have their hats on they can go through
doors and find themselves in completely different surroundings and
water can keep them hidden from the chairman?

It
all sounds whimsical but it isn't as it becomes a chase between the
lovers who want to stay together and the men who want to keep them apart
so the planets will stay aligned. There are questions about whether
free will exists, higher intelligence, master of fate, existentialism
without special effects making you so "What?" but a story that makes you
say "What?" and "Why?"

Damon and Blunt work well together while the men in hats. Anthony Mackie, John Slattery,
Michael Kelly and Terrence Stamp are sinister looking and acting,
threatening and makes you wonder if that's how are angels are, if that
is what they are!

This is a romance and mystery for adults which has become a rare thing in movies.

What--you don't like Jack? Personally, I don't either. But I think he's a good actor (or is it really acting?)

I use to like him--thought he was a good actor but now he is just a ham!

The TV promo looked interesting, but that's deceiving. You'll be happy to know that I actually watched a whole movie on TV the other night! "The Bucket List". I enjoyed it immensely! Surprise, surprise.
