Once again I spent 3+ hours in front
of the TV watching the Oscar show and at the end asked myself, "Why?!"
Not only that but I also watched the hour and a half red carpet 'show'
for the first, and last, time practically asking for punishment and I
am not a masochist!! I also know I will watch the Oscars again next
year!
The show has been over for 15
minutes and I bet you, like me, don't remember 80% of the winners and
what category they won. Heck, a month or two from now you won't
remember who won the best supporting actor and actress if you even
remember the best actress,
actor and movie winners. I appreciate the hard work everyone puts into
making a movie but as important as they are do the people who watch the
show care about the technical awards? No, they don't, and what they
care about is who wore what, who flubbed their acceptance speech, who
made them laugh and who made them cry.
Let's get down to the nitty
gritty starting with the hosts. Ann Hathaway was animated, looked like
she was really enjoying herself and I wish they would have let her
sing some more--what a voice! James Franco was wooden, looked
uncomfortable but was game with his drag bit and the ballet outfit!
Their opening was good but he didn't deliver with the high energy she
did after that point.
Billy Crystal and Bob Hope got more laughs within 5 minutes than the rest of the presenters did in 3 hours.
Jeff
Bridges was very classy in his presentation of the Best Actress award
while Sandra Bullock, looking great, brought some much needed humor
when presenting the Best Actor Oscar.
Kirk Douglas was a hit with his comments but was on just a bit too long though that might have been due to his age and stroke.
There were no surprises as far as the winners went and none of the films ran away with awards.
As usual the songs nominated were presented in bland segments though Celine Dion did a good "Smile" while the 'in memorian'
took place and though I was a big fan of Lena Horne her being singled
out didn't work. 18 minutes later and I can't tell you what won for
best song!
The best musical presentation, besides Ann Hathaway' s quick segment singing "On My Own" from "Les Miz",
was at the end when the children's chorus from PS 22 in Staten Island,
New York, did a beautiful rendition of "Over The Rainbow".
As far as the clothes went no one was outrageous though Annette Benning with her 'spider dress' came pretty close. Nicole Kidman was stunning, Jennifer Hudson in her red/tangerine dress showed off
her new svelte figure and Sandra Bullock looked great in her red dress.
Josh Brolin and Javiar Bardem, wearing white tuxes, looked out of place with most of the men in black tie.
All
in all the producers of the Oscar really didn't bring anything new to
the presentations or looking at the past though it did come in almost
at the 3 hour limit.
For the record: Best picture "The King's Speech"
Best Actor Colin Firth Best Actress Natalie Portman
Best Supporting Actor Christine Bale Best Supporting Actress Melissa Leo
