31,500,000 Google Hits! No, Not Me! :O)

For whatever reason I have not slept
for the past 36 hours--and I am a guy who never had a problem going to or
staying   asleep or sleeping the night through--I was disturbed enough to want
to go to the drugstore and get an OTC sleeping aid--I did want to talk to my
doctor but try to get a hold  of a doctor on a Saturday!

In any case I grabbed a bus at 8 AM (Yes, you read that right--8
AM!!) and went to my local CVS--I was going to buy melatorium which a few people
had recommended--turns out I couldn't find it until the pharmacist asked what I
was looking for--how did I know it was with the vitamins???

In any case the pharmacist said I
should talk to my doctor before I take ANY OTC drugs considering what I had just
been through and all the new drugs I was taking. She did say that since my dose
of xanax was so small---0.25 mgs--that she couldn't see any harm in my
doubling the dose at night to help get some sleep--she, also, suggested, that I
go home and take a half a pill and see if that doesn't help me to get to sleep
after being awake for so
long.

I've written before about my 'fear' of
becoming addicted to drugs and I was sort of leery of increasing the xanax dosage let alone depending upon it to
go to sleep---in any case I did take a half a pill and got about 2 hours
sleep--I will take two pills tonight and hopefully that will work--I certainly plan to call my
doctor Monday and see what he has to say about all this and/or if he has any
other recommendations.

By the way I am not a fan of google--I googled xanax and got
31,500,000 responses--am I suppose to read all these just to find out what basic
information I want/need about addiction???

Pharmacists sometimes know all the answers you are asking for and I would feel like there is less room for misunderstanding or confusing information by talking to a pharmacist than by depending entirely on something on the internet. It's amazing how many hits, huh? Looking something like this up on the computer is a great way to begin research, but I'd consult that pharmacist when the time comes for actually taking some action. Even if the doctor says/suggests something, I'd ask the pharmacist about it.

I also think that AJ is right. It is almost necessary to talk to the pharmacist before adding any new substance to your regimen. Also, if your library has a PDR, it gives a lot of information all in one spot. (The print is kind of small.) From what I've read xanax is a little on the addictive side. Your doctor should have someone on call on Saturdays and Sundays and his off hours... Take care.

I would imagine since you are not as active as you once were, that is affecting your sleep. I sure hope you can get some good rest Martin! Believe me I know how it is to try and function on little to no sleep.

Melatonin always gives me really weird dreams, but I do rest pretty well. It just creates some colorful images.

You can limit your search by adding more terms to your search. Such as "xanx AND 'sleep aid'" or "xanax AND addiction".
It was a good idea to talk to a pharmacist before taking any medication because you never know what might happen with interactions with your presecriptions. That is one of the reasons I think it is a bad idea when prescription meds are turned into OTC options. Interactions can be a REALLY bad thing.
