Dreaming Out Loud

I think at one time or another, we all dream about being our own boss and owning our own business. Both of my parents owned businesses of their own while I was growing up and I saw the upside and down of being in business for yourself.

And even though I know that being your own boss isn't always what it's cracked up to be, I sometimes dream of having my own small business.

Dreaming is healthy they say!

I like to dream that someday it would be possible to own a used bookstore with a small cafe. Just a small, quaint store, with a couple of tables in the middle of a room filled with shelves. A small counter displays homemade cookies or other goodies of the day and herbal teas. Regular and decaf coffee are fresh brewed with flavored and regular creamer. Keeping it simple!

It would be decorated in a country look. I've seen this wallpaper that actually looks like books on bookshelves. This is what I want!

People could trade their books in for store credit for more books. They could come in for a book, stay for a cup of coffee or tea and maybe even have a treat! And the whole visit would probably still be less than the price of a new book at a chain bookstore!

And then...here's the best part! This is going to make it into an ideal, dreamy job that I would so look forward to going to every day! You know how most used stores have a cat? Well, I was thinking I'd like to bring one or both of the pugs! They would be behind the counter most of the time and I'd bring their kennel for times when they got over-excited. I don't know if I would find some trouble or conflict with this part and the cafe. But if made to make a choice, I would choose having the dogs come to work with me and be a part of the used book store ambiance.

I even have an alternative. If the cafe idea is scratched, but the pugs are in: I'd replace the tables with a couple of mis matched love seats and coffee tables which would display book specials and other store news, newsletters etc. And the counter of drinks would be replaced by a doggy section that would sell homemade dog treats and other dog novelties.
