The Prince, who is second in line to the throne, will wed his long-term girlfriend in the spring or summer of next year.
The pair became engaged last month during a private holiday in Kenya.
They began dating eight years ago while studying at St Andrews University in Fife, where they shared a house.
The engagement was announced in a statement released by Clarence House.
It said: "The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton.
"The wedding will take place in the spring or summer of 2011, in London. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course.
"Prince William has informed The Queen and other close members of his family.
"Prince William has also sought the permission of Miss Middleton's father.
"Following the marriage, the couple will live in north Wales, where Prince William will continue to serve with the Royal Air Force."
If the pair get married in the summer of 2011, the ceremony may fall on the 30th anniversary of the wedding of his father, Prince Charles, to the late Diana, Princess of Wales.
Prime Minister David Cameron's spokeswoman said he was "delighted" and sent the couple his very best.
Labour leader Ed Miliband said he was also delighted for Prince William and Kate Middleton, adding: "The whole country will be wishing them every happiness."
This is the official announcement which the UK have been waiting for.
I expect that Her Majesty and The Duchess of Cornwall will organize the union in truly traditional style, so befitting the wonderful event.
It is so marvelous, that Prince William and his brother Prince Henry ('Harry' as most of you know, was a 'pet' name) are so happy, with their fathers union with  Camilla, which was so evident at the marriage betwixt the couple. I think that (behind the scenes) a lot of jubilation, is probably going on. (Camilla, of course was Prince Charles 'first' true love - but she married Peter Bowles - I don't think Charles ever got over that). Still, they are together now - that is all that matters. Camilla, has grown older, with so much natural grace . . . I wonder how many of us can truly, say that??? lol . . . I know I cannot!
Her Majesty will undoubtedly be delighted, that such a lovely girl is going to become a member of her family. The Queen loves her family - this is shown in the numerous documentaries shown here in the UK - of course, she is a stickler for certain rules - she has to be! There are so many 'eyes' watching her family.
Christmas, is the time of year that the Queen, her court and the family get together for the traditional 'knees - up' at Balmoral.
This, is when Her Majesty can (and does) let her 'hair down'! I daresay a fine time will be had by all.
