A Poem by Dylan Thomas

Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night By Dylan Thomas

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

I have never liked this poem because it never does any good to rage against death. Everything has to die and people who are in intense pain welcome death. Not that I want to go and I don't plan to give up on life but I hope to meet it gracefully when it comes my way.

I love Dylan Thomas. Another one--"My Papa's Waltz"--just wonderful. Hope you have a lovely weekend!

Ah, Dylan! I miss your mind! Sharp and incisive at time, you easily forced me out of my box. Not changing my POV much, but at least creating issues which still force me to evaluate "me" again and again!

If I "went gently into that good night," I would no longer be me.

Thanks for another ride Elk, it is exhilarating!

I love this poem. It's about not giving up. That's what is so great about it. At least, not giving up without a fight! That's how life should be.
