Rumblings & Rambles

Not sure where this post is going to go today.   Just a hodge podge of stuff I guess..
I'm glad it's almost Friday....I'm tired.   I'm just sitting here watching it rain.   It's gonna be soggy all day.    Which really doesn't bother me, maybe it will keep things quiet, which would be nice...but I'm not holding my breathe...LOL
We had our last Leadership class on Tuesday.   It was Agriculture day.  So we got to see lots of cows, goats, more cows, horses, cows, and colts....did I mention we saw cows...we saw lots of cows.     We got to drive out in the middle of corn fields in the middle of no where...it was interesting to say the least.   I'm amazed how hard the smaller farmers are having it with sky rocking prices and fuel prices.   Most are having to diversify just to break even.   You don't see many family farms anymore, which is really sad.
One of the highlights was seeing all the horses and their colts.  Must have been 30 horses on this farm.   We drove into the pasture and the gentleman leading the tour got out of his truck and shook a bag and called to them....and the next thing you know is 30+ horses running toward you.   An amazing site to behold.   They were beautiful quarter horses.
The last stop of the day was at an Organic Farm.   Which was really interesting.   Kristy you would have loved it.    It was called Bountiful Blessings.   They have a customer share plan type thing, where you pay to help them with their planting and you share in the harvest or crops...if it is sucessful your able to recieve tons of the veggies and things all thru the year.  IF the crops do not do well...well you share in that too.  It's called a CSA.     If your interested in something like this...some things to read would be The New Organic Grower by Eliot Coleman.   ATTRA.org has free info on all aspects of sustainable agriculture.   A Magazine called "Growing for Market"...also a website called localharvest.org.   It was a really interesting day and I learned alot about the agriculture in this community.
I spent all day yesterday trying to play catch up.  Plus trying to get my office organized.   It's been driving me nuts, so I'm trying to figure out how to use my space better.   I've ordered some things to help towards that end and hope they come in soon.    I'm being buried under paperwork, pretty soon all you will be able to see is the top of my head...*laughs*
I hope everyone had a nice Mother's Day.   I got a surprise...my mom called me to wish me a good day.   I know to most of you that doesn't sound like much of a surprise.   But my mom never calls me unless something is wrong.  So for her to call me was nice.   She is always worried about long distance on her phone and wouldn't call.   But I pay her phone bill and I put long distance on it so she could call.    I'm glad I did...because she is really enjoying it.
Were having our lunch here at the office catered today, which is really nice.  One of the ladies who shares our office -  her husband and his mom - own a catering company so they are going to do our lunch.   Which is great because if you had to get out today in all this rain you'd need a row boat...LOL
It's still quiet at the moment...think I'll enjoy that and go read some blogs...
Have a great Thursday everybody...

Being back in the midwest again after 4 years, I am happy to see cows, and horses and more cows, and pigs, and more cows!

The Bountiful Blessings sounds very cool! I've been wanting to sign up for Urban Harvest here in town... they deliver locally grown organic fruits, veggies n' juices to your door year round. (Well, in the winter months they have to import some organic produce, but they do their best not to.) Anyhow, Happy Friday!

I love being in farm areas! I love seeing veggies and horses and, yes, I love seeing cows! I think your hodge-podge of a post was really nice.

I'm glad, too, that you put long distance calls on your Mom's phone--she and I talk every night--she tell me about her bingo winnings and the men chasing her around and I tell her about--oh, wait a minute, I promised her I wouldn't tell--delete this comment!!!

The tour of the farms sounds really nice. I especially enjoyed reading about the farm where people share in the profits and/or losses. I would love to get into something like that so that I could have fresh veggies all through the growing season.

Yes. It IS a shame the small, family farms are disappearing!
The "customer share" farm is interesting though. Sounds like a great concept!

Happy Thursday, Elfie! Our government has started, slowly, to introduce incentives and supplements to local, family owned and operated farms because they have such a hard time in this day and age.The organic co-op farm place sounds neat.

The 'getting to the end of the week' always drags by, but Friday and the weekend beckon . . .

Happy day before Friday!!!
I am going to go to that website now! I have heard about the share crop thing, I haven't seen one in my area though when I have looked in the past. Time to re-investigate!
