Dating Rules?

On my way in to work this morning I was listening to the radio. They had been talking about the interview Garth Brooks did with Ellen on her talk show. She asked him about his daughters and what his rules were for their dating. His girls are 11, 13, and 15….he said they weren’t dating yet, they couldn’t date until they were 16….and his first rule was that they would drive the first date…that way if anything got out of order they could get outta there fast..

This led to a discussion they opened up to the listeners…and I laughed all the way to work.

Do you remember your parent’s rules for dating?

I sure do…my daddy said the boys had to come in the house…no sitting outside in the car - no honking the car horn …this wasn’t a pizza delivery and ….and he really didn’t talk to the poor guy when he did come in..…basically just stared at him a lot and make him never want to set foot in my house again…
The other be home by curfew…or his and my butt was cooked…he always told the guy “I’ll find out where you live” I usually got home before curfew…LOL

Some of the folks on the radio had me laughing so hard….I thought I was the only one who’s parents had these crazy rules growing up…but I guess we all have them…

So fellow mybloggers bloggers….what were your dating rules? Did you have any? Did your parents like to scare the guys or girls to death before they let you out the door?

I remember my mother 'Augusta' trying to teach me french for one of my dates, back then I had a boyfriend for everyday of the week, but for some reason I'm sure she was trying her best to re-place me with a foreign exchange student

My father would make the boy come in with his driver license so my father could copy down his address and also get the license plate number from the car. I didn't date much.

my folks' rules were similar to yours...especially with the car honking thing. no going out on school nights...no dating people that were out of high school already. Mama and Daddy also pumped my potential suitors for all sorts of personal information. It wasn't that they cared about me so much, they were just nosey. They were nuts about Mr. Bugg when they met him. I think Daddy was impressed 'cause Mr. Bugg was the only person who could out talk him

Never had any 'dating rules'--I think my brother took the brunt of that!

It was the same for me. My dad was pretty nice about it, but he'd ask a million questions. you know like where are you going? How long have you had your license? Do you drink or use drugs (It was the 70's I mean come on). I may be exaggerating a bit, but he did ask questions.

My parents never put many restrictions on me; but we lived in a rural community, and they knew every boy I dated as well as their parents and where they lived.

I almost missed out on my first date when the boy came to my front door and asked for Marge. My mother told him he must have the wrong house as there was no one there named Marge.

Hmm.. Maybe my childhood was more dysfunctional than I thought. I do remember going to a young lady's house when I was 14 (unfortunately I went to the neighbor's house first), and her daddy drove us the the high school were the dance was. That was about it for "dating". Lets see, Kim's maw was a barmaid and work nights, so I'd go up to Kim's after dark if she didn't come to my neighborhood... and Janet! LOL She lived in the Bronx and I lived in Queens. She was going to spend the night once and my maw was shocked when she offered to fix up the spare bed and Janet said, "That's alright, I'll sleep with John". You got the idea by now! Anyway, in my maw's defense, it was the 60's.

Good grief! Did my parents ever have rules! I had to be home by 11:00 on the dot. No excuses. I was only late once, and OMG, did I ever hear about it--for days. They also banned me from seeing one boyfriend, which only made me more creative in finding ways to see him. Oh dear, Elf...I could go on and on. It's all funny now, though.
On the other hand, when my girls started dating, I was very nice to the young men. However, we've been burned a couple of times by young men who weren't necessarily respectful of our daughter or our family, and we've had to alter our policies. I am now very stern with these guys the first time I meet them, generally calling them "boy" at least once, and telling them exactly how I expect them to conduct themselves. I hope someday that my daughters will laugh about it.

sadly, I really didn't date much til I was out of high school... I guess I was a bit of a late bloomer?
I made up for it though..

I didn't have many rules put on me by my parents-but I know I scared my girlfriends parents when I showed in a pick-up with a camper on the back.
