A Telling Experience

Ted had a long session at the V. A. dental clinic yesterday.
Usually you don't see many of the wounded there but I had
an experience in the waiting room that brought the horror
close to me.

I take a book because the wait is long. A woman came in
with a cane and taking tiny, shuffling steps. She had
obviously sustained a serious brain injury. She was given
a form to fill out. She looked at it a long time and then
approached me and said, "I can't read anymore." " Will you
read it to me." Of course I did and she was able to mark
the yes and no questions with an X.

Just one ruined life among so many devastated by war. Will
the world ever wake up and put an end to the senseless
slaughter? I think not. Long after I am gone people will
still be trying to impose their belief systems on others.
It makes me sad.

Even after Vietnam and 20 years of Russia in Afghanistan our "leaders" still don't get it.

after my dad passed away I found a journal he had on the computer. It only had one entry and said something like, I wish there could be no more wars. No more young people going off to a foreign land to fight other young people.
My dad was in WWII

There is a WWII veteran that we see when we go out to eat. He proudly
wears a hat proclaiming it. I am proud of your Dad and applaud
the sentiment he expressed, There is no glory in battle...just carnage.

That's something I don't hear much about -- the female veterans with life-altering injuries. War is different now. I'm glad someone as nice as you was there to read for her.

Some of them are mothers and amputees. It breaks my heart. The brain
injuries seem almost the worst to me. If there is no one to care for
them, survival must be the hardest kind of work.

How fortunate are those of us who have been on the sidelines and not immediately affected. But we ought all to be aware of the cost of endless violence. Obama is criticized for being cautious but I think he is being responsible. It was instant testosterone when Bush sent troops into Iraq on a lie. And this one act has derailed us in that region. It can't be fixed overnight, or, perhaps, ever.

I just wanted to burst into tears when this poor woman thanked me for
helping her. It was such a little thing to do. The war caused by lies
has damaged so many. I am glad Obama is cautious.

How sad... I guess at least it's voluntary and not draft anymore! Sad regardless.

When you multiply that one life by so many, it cannot fail to arouse
compassion, empathy and a profound distaste for violence. How is
baby boy coming along? Pregnancy is not for the faint of heart.
