A Teacher's Worst Nightmare

My grandaughter, Sara has been a band director at a Tulsa
highschool for almost three years. She has gotten a lot
of recognition for her work with Jazz and Mariachi.
Last week, a day before she was to leave for New York City
to accompany a jazz band she was assaulted by a large female student. Sara is a tiny petite girl who may weigh
a hundred pounds dripping wet, She suffered a concussion
but went to New York City anyway. She was beaten in the
head while trying to protect a student.

This has dampened her love of teaching music and she is
ready to leave the teaching field. Our teachers suffer
from low pay, long hours, extremely high health insurance
and a lack of respect.

What more are Oklahoma teachers expected to take. Sara
went to college on a full music scholarship so I know
that she is talented. She is caring and warm and has a
great personality. This girl has a history of assault
and this is the second time she beaten up on a teacher.
It seems to me that she should not have been allowed
back into a public highschool.

I was much happier working in an education service center
doing prescriptive teaching, testing, and counseling
rather than in the classroom. However, I never had to
deal with violence from a student and I enjoyed working
with parents.

I don't have any answers but it seems to me that our state will never be able to keep teachers when violence
enters the classroom.

It's frightening and such a contrast to my young school years. We certainly had problem students, but they weren't so bold. And I went to an inner city school with a large black student body. Actually, because I was smart in class, black kids would chase me home. I was fast, I diverted into a church where I had gone to Girl Scout meetings. I learned they thought I lived there. I did not develop racism because of these events. In some way, I understood they were at a disadvantage which did not translate into me thinking I wasn't at risk. We were all scheduled to graduate to the same high school. I reasoned that they would be worse as they grew older. So I avoided them by getting a permit to an out of district high school and I got to live.

Violence in a school must result in a total ban of the perps from any public education facility, including for athletic events. There is no excuse for it.

Absolutely right. This highschool will lose an excellent band director
because the conditions are so bad in the school.

City schools are cesspools. Some of those kids aren't fit to live in any society.

It seems to me that parents whose expectations are high seem to have
the best kids. It always tickles me to see cat and dog mothers give
puppies and kittens a sharp nip or a slap when they are out of line.

I have heard horror stories about what kids can get away with in school, with little repercussions! But if a teacher puts their hand on a student all hell breaks loose. Seems SO backwards to me...

It took three people to handcuff this student, a policeman, a security
guard and a big student who was helping Sara. The girl was probably
mentally ill but help is too slow in arriving.
