Ladies Who Lunch

Three of my friends and I were invited to tour the new
Salvation Army facility and have lunch there. It was a
unique, enlightening and a lovely experience.

Several of the wealthier people in Oklahoma city had paid
for the facility. It was new and clean and had a lot of
windows to let the sun in. It consisted of family quarters
with a playground, a men's dormitory, a kitchen and lunch
room, a chapel and offices.

The most impressive thing to me was the fact that 84 cents
of every dollar donated goes to helping people in a very
practical way. Their mission is religious but they don't
force it on their clients. If they don't want the Gospel,
they get love and help anyway. Love and respect for the
down and out are the operative words here.

Lunch was delicious. We had a good salad, chicken pot pie
and chocolate chip cookies. The same meal that the residents are served.

While we ate, we chatted with a minister who volunteers
there about the charities who abuse their mission by
paying huge administrative costs and perks for their
employees. Of course, it is all about ego getting in the
way of actual helping. No one who has ever seen a
Salvation Army uniform could ever accuse them of being
flamboyant.

Use to be that if you wanted to eat you had to "listen" first. Maybe that's just a urban legend, thankfully I have no personal experience.

You know that I am not a religious person but I was really impressed by
the sparse amount that went for administration with the bulk going to
the down and out clients. Also by the quality of the food served.

There is an article in the Las Vegas paper today about a non-profit that flies ill children around. The director is paid $255,000 a year, her husband is paid $75,000, and she has a $2.3 million retirement plan. The charity paid $1.1 million to one of those fundraising outfits in 2013, and all they raised was $192,000.

We really need this organization because it ministers to basic and
immediate need. I will continue to support it because I really believe
in the good they are doing.

I grew up in an apartment complex attached to and owned by the main Salvation Army Temple in Chicago. I studied music there. Attended Girl Guide meetings. Went to their summer camp. Played the grand piano in the big meeting hall when it was empty. Loved the staff band -- very talented. I don't know why there should be a Men's Dorm. What about the women? Went to their summer camp. I haven't played the cornet in years, lost my lip.

Teal, I just found out they have a woman's shelter with a dorm and
common room and out door space. We weren't shown that because there
were no vacancies and they didn't want to intrude on the women.

I really don't know what the women do and that occured to me too. I guess there are shelters they are directed to. I always contribute to
their summer camp, just as much as I can and if my life wasn't so hectic
I would volunteer for their after school program.
