Heartbreak

Our great nephew has said that every pet is a potential heartbreak. He learned this the hard way, losing the dog he grew up with named Rebel.

We recognize this but would never want to be without a dog or cat to love. China managed to live until she was seventeen and was always eccentric even for a Siamese.
She and Piwacket were my favorite cats.

As most of you know, we recently lost Rex, whose cancer went to his bones and so suddenly that we were unprepared for his inability to walk He was one of my best dogs ever,
sharing that rank with Muffin and a dog we had when I was
a teen named Purupatee. Jose will rank right up there with them, he is a sweetheart. We were able to recover faster from Rex's death because Jose needed us and we needed him.

So never let the potential heartache keep you from loving the creatures who are available to you. The nurture of a
pet enriches the soul. I am so grateful for all of the
experiences with all the animals that I have loved over the years. My children are compassionate and loving because they had pets to care for. My son is gone but his little dog, Mandy, makes me feel close to him and is
a great comfort to his family, just as she was a comfort to him in his final illness.

Well, depending on how close I was to the cat, I don't know how I'd feel if he (I always have boy cats) went off to be with another family. :(

Kristy, it is worth it. Loving care can teach a lesson to children about being gentle and compassionate. Life hurts sometimes but there is so much pleasure to owning a pet.

Every one of my cats had unique traits that I'll never forget, and even as I enjoy my current cat, I miss that special thing that this one or that one would do. Eloise isn't much of a special cat aside from being a good mouser, and while I appreciate that quite a bit, I miss the cats that used to keep me company while I cooked, and the one that brought us milk rings so he could retrieve them.

They are all unique. China loved to sit on a throw rug and demand that you pull her around and around over the floor.

Jay was a cat lover, was proud that the ship's cat chose to have kittens in his bunk when he was in the Merchant Marine during WWII. I wanted to have cats and he discouraged it because the loft was full of electronic hazards and he thought they would be injured. But when he was ill and not active, I got two kittens, Scratch and Sniff. The nurse put them on Jay's lap, and compromised as he was, he protected them from falling off. I do think he found comfort in having them around. They were certainly a constant joy because two kittens cavorting and playing is really special. I have four kitty urns -- Scratch, Sniff, Chewy, and Brunswick. I miss them all but Brunswick's loss hangs on. He was
a person.

My comment to you was the story about my dog, Purupatee. Somehow it posted as a reply to Kristilyn.

So well written and so true of course. It is such a big loss to lose a pet but man, they are so very worth it.

Some of them are really special to us. When I moved away from home, Purupatee moved also. He found a family with children to play with. My Dad went and got him five times and each time he returned to the family he had selected. Daddy finally told the people that they could have him. He recognized that Purupatee had made his choice.
