I spent four hours at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art
with friends yesterday. I was amused and impressed
by their gallery of fake masterpieces by John Myatt, De Hory and Mark Landis. Most especially by John Myatt and
his technique of mixing house paint and KY jelly. He
fooled the experts from l986 to l994 and after serving
four months of a six month sentence is selling his own
paintings and making a lot of money.
Mark Landis call his fakes his arts and crafts now
that he has been exposed and says that he can churn out
three mastpieces in the time it takes to watch a Turner
Classic Movie. He donated his works, dressed in the
robes of a Catholic priest, in the memory of his mother
and father, for the attention it garnered in the art
world. Since no money changed hands, he was not prosecuted. He has been diagnosed as schizophrenic.
De Hory had a miserable life, spent time in a concentration camp in Nazi Germany and finally took his
own life. Google these men for an amazing read.
I had seen the Chillhouly glass exhibition before and
it was awe inspiring to see it again. Especially the
expertly lighted glass ceiling and the amethyist candles.
The huge glass tree was simply unbelievable.
I was underwhelmed by the Andy Warhol exhibit so just
call me ignorant and unappreciative.
