The Fabric Artist
The Fabric Artist
Being a docent at the Governor's mansion is always interesting and
you meet some great people who are interested in history and antiques. Yesterday was no exception. The most memorable couple
was from North Dakota. The wife was in a wheel chair and as we visited, she told me that she was a fabric artist. She had her kindle with her and many samples of her work were on it. She said that when she had lost the use of her legs, she had to reinvent
herself to keep from being depressed. Thus came the quilting and
the art.
Her story quilt was the most interesting. She used a special fabric paint and put pictures of her grandchildren on it, a picture of her
childhood home, the barn and all the animals. She was truly an artist and the pictures she painted were very realistic and very good. She also made modern quilts like the ones of trees in a forest and all the old traditional patterns like the flower garden
and the wedding ring patterns. I was especially interested because I grew up with a quilting frame at my grandmother's house all winter. Everytime you visited her all of the women and girls quilted while they talked.
This was the classic example of the old saw, "If life gives you
lemons, then make lemonaide."
