Where Did Autumn Go?

We didn't get to have a nice, cool fall this year. Instead it turned to winter without the autumn leaves and wonderful weather. I had to cover my plants and store the patio cushions and worst of all, walk Jose in 34 degree morning temperatures. We froze. I had on three layers plus a jacket and Jose wore his little coat. I had a scarf and a stocking cap on too. Of course, I realize the cold hurts worse now that I am on blood thinners. He has a heavy Pomeranian coat. I hope that I soon get used to winter and enjoy the cozy aspects of it like fires in the fireplace and books to read.

I have to go get some lab work done today. I have errands to run too. Sara and Linda are coming this weekend and I need to plan the menu and shop for their visit.

Mike and Fredo sent me some garlic chive seed for which I am profoundly grateful. I have sage and basil and rosemary and I hope it will winter over. I need to dig up a hydrangea and prepare it for my cousin to take home with her. She is coming to see us again on Thanksgiving. We have big plans for her visit. My okra was so successful that I am planting it again next year. Six plants gave us enough for meals and to freeze for gumbo. The tomatoes did not do very well. The mums are gorgeous and last night I noticed the hibiscus was outdoing itself as was the mandevalya vine. Usually I can preserve the flowers until Thanksgiving but not this year!!

I can't grow anything. When I succeeded one year, a hurricane destroyed my flowering bushes in minutes. My friend gave me tomato plants and told me how to care for them. I followed his instructions carefully. They died. A neighbor gave me several potted plants to tend while she was away. I should have warned her. They died.

Cool weather came fast here too, but I find it refreshing. I lost most of the summer with my leg issues and now I can still work up a sweat splitting woods in 45 degrees. Refreshing! We had tomatoes for months. I skin them and put them in the crock pot with some squash and whatever is around and Donna loves it. I have bags of peppers, beans, tomatoes and scapes in the freezer. Stay warm.

My little back yard plots did not yield tomatoes very well this year. Usually I have them until fall. This year they were done in August. I envy your gardening abilities but not your winter.

My best crop this year was chives, and the Italian parsley did well, too. I have a hanging pot with rosemary, thyme and some not great parsley that I will probably take to Las Vegas for the winter unless I can talk the neighbor into taking it into foster care. What I like about gardening is we can always plan for next year and try to learn from past mistakes.

I hope your pots of herbs go to Las Vegas with you. My BIL gave me a fulsome compliment about the flavors my food always has. I am sure it is due to the herbs that I use.

I will try to comfort myself with the thought that summer is coming.

My tomatoes didn’t do much this year either. Green beans thrived tho!
Good luck with today’s chores and bundle up. I think we will have an Indian summer in november.

I hope you are right about the Indian Summer. It is my favorite time of year. I love to walk in the woods and feel the leaves crunch under my feet. Congratulations on your garden, it is a wonderful feeling to harvest vegetables.
