Ted and I just finished a whirlwind bus trip called South
West Legends and had a wonderful time, although we are
exhausted.
We chose this trip because of Ted's physical limitations
and because we love Santa Fe and the Rocky Mountains. The
first night we spent in Amarillo and saw the drama "Texas"
in an outdoor ampitheater in Palo Duro canyon. It was a
musical and the special effects were by Disney and were
fantastic. A barbecue preceded it.
The next night we stayed on the plaza at the Drury Inn.
We luched at the Cow Girl Cafe and had the best fajitas that I have ever eaten. It hailed and rained while we
were eating so we went on to the Drury Lane Inn and were
treated to happy hour with dinner. Our room was gorgeous
and we had a lot of fun drinkiing and visiting.
The next morning, Ted and I opted for a visit to the New
Mexico State Capitol where they display 8 million dollars
worth of art dating to the l6th century. There was an
ancient hand carved wooden crucifix made by early Spanish
monks that was breathtaking. There was so much to see and we only had an hour to see it. It was my favorite
thing on the whole trip. We had lunch at the little village of Chimayo and then on to Taos for shopping and
to the Taos Pueblo. These were favorite things. We spent the night in Taos.
The next day we rode a train through the rockies from
Chama, New Mexico to Antoineta, Colorado. It was a six
hour trip with fantastic scenery but much too long and
ultimately we were all bored. Ted and I were so tired
that we ordered a pizza and went to bed early in Alamosa,
Colorado. We saw a lot of the rockies that were not
accesible by car but it was too much of a good thing.
We came home Saturday morning. Everyone was congenial
and fun and we met a couple that we really liked and
exchanged phone numbers. I hope that we can get together. It was a mixed group of teachers, lawyers,
ranchers and even included a man that Ted had gone to
highschool with. We liked him but his wife was a well
meaning disaster.
I forgot to include an evening with Michael Martin Murphy
the guy who wrote Wildfire. It was at Red River New
Mexico. He isn't my cup of tea but the setting was
gorgeous and two teen agers took Ted and I over and waited on us hand and foot. They furnished a Chuck Wagon meal before the concert.
Now, I will have to diet and exercise like crazy after all that eating and sitting. The altitude bothered me
this time, although it never had before. I was short of
breath most of the time. I guess I am, with all apologies to Laura, a flatlander.
