Trashlessness

Okay, a mystery: The man next door (yes, the one who makes me somewhat crazy) never puts out garbage cans anymore, or the recycling ones either, on garbage day. I’m pretty sure I’d have noticed since I’m walking around the block at all hours. There’s been a lack of cans at his house for I think a month or more. Does he eat it? Does he produce no garbage whatsoever? Does he take it to work? (He leaves in his truck every day about 5 am.) I haven’t seen any signs of him burning it, inside or out.

He didn’t move away. It has been quieter there recently, but there’s his cars in the driveway all the time, still. I never see the woman I assumed was his wife. And now that I recall, I thought something was off when I saw a plastic milk bottle on his lawn, blown there one day of terrific wind, remain there for ages and was there every time I walked past and thought to look for it. I was about to pick it up but I decided to see if he was still being so meticulous about his lawn. Apparently not.

Tomorrow’s supposed to be nice and sunny so maybe he’ll have his dog tied outside in the afternoon. Sometimes when the dog’s outside, he’s out too, working on the yard. I’ll look for him.

Unless you are totally alienated and all contact is angry confrontation, you could knock on his door and ask him. I know he drives you crazy, but maybe you could change the relationship to a less toxic one if you reached out.

Perhaps he eats out all the time but even so it seems that he would
have a lot of paper and container trash. Do you suppose that he is
some kind of hoarder?

Oh, I don't think he's a hoarder, and I don't even think he eats take-out that often. I may be wrong, but the well-maintained truck and yard -- it just seems like he's a Pennsylvania good old boy. They cook at home more often than not.

How very interesting! I'll watch here for the resolution.

Now I really want to get to the bottom of it.

By the way, in the winter I discontinue my trash service and save up trash bags until it starts again in the spring. There's no food scraps in it - those go out for the birds and I burn all the paper/cardboard, generate about 1 bag every two weeks. If it gets too much, I have a friend with a dumpster who lets me put some in there. If I had neighbors, they'd probably notice this state of trashlessness here, too.

See, out in the country you can do all number of things and no one might know. In my little suburb you do not burn trash. The smoke would hang around, and all your neighbors are so close.

You know how much I love those sort of mysteries.

Darn, the day flew by and I forgot to even look outside until it was after 4 and he would've been home. Well, next week I'll have to try to remember to watch when the trash truck comes. Either he hands it right to them, or he takes it somewhere. He doesn't work for the municipality, but might have access to a landfill or something.

We have to get you something to keep you busy!!

Oh, I'm busy. It's because I work from home, that I'm too aware of conditions around me sometimes.
