Storage and Ikea

Finally I am in the process of moving out from my 2nd storage unit, and unfortunately it is really stuffed with boxes from stem to stern. I made 2 trips yesterday in my car, about 15 miles one way, and was maddened when on my 2nd trip, when the office of the storage place was closed, found that my pass code didn’t work. There are 3 doors I have to open at nighttime: the massive outer garage door, then the inner metal door that also raises up like a garage door, and then the door to my unit. When I’d gotten there, the massive metal garage door was open since someone else was there, and the inner main door was open as well. (Each one closes automatically after a few minutes.) But I didn’t need to code in to go downstairs to unlock my unit and get boxes to my car. Or at least, the first load… then I went back and the inner door had shut, so I punched in my passcode, and it didn’t work. So I only got the car partly full. Drove home and unloaded that. This is the 3rd time there’s been an issue with access that I’m supposed to have. I can’t really complain to the manager too much about this, because I’m getting some fees waived already, and she’s making it affordable for me to pay and close out my unit. But I can’t move out in time if I can’t get in.

Tomorrow I’ll have to get them to fix it, and take another carload home. I only have a few days to move out so hope I can arrange to use one of the trucks that belong to the place, which is supposed to be a perk for a one-time use. I have had 4 large units rented over the years and never had the use of their trucks, so hoping I’ll get one to move out.

My garage and basement are becoming junked up with this stuff so my new career is to go through and toss out what I can. There was an article about a man in another country who repaired Apple computers and now has a collection of the old ones since the 80s. He can’t afford to continue to rent the space to hold them all, about 1100 of them. I can relate. I am taking photos of things I find because i don’t know what a lot of them are, and only Mike can tell me if a computer part has to be kept.

I also have a lot more Ikea pine shelving than I realized. Does everyone in America have tons of Ikea stuff?

The longer we live the more stuff we have. I am about to give up and leave it all to my daughter to sort when I am dead. Woe is us! BTW I have never bought anything from Ikea.

Yes, your stuff should please you while you have it but it's not something to worry about. The items I needed after my mother's passing were simple, like a blouse she wore a lot.

We had a storage unit in Las Vegas for years, full of vintage paperback Sci-Fi books, McDonald's Happy Meal toys, and Beanie Babies, all belonging to Mr. Troutbend, and boxes of Christmas ornaments - mine. It was $35 a month for years, and then they started raising the rates so we got our stuff out. Now, it's arranged in that house there, not necessarily tastefully, because he can't bear to part with his collections. And why should I give up my Christmas ornaments if he's not going to make an accommodation on his end of it. Best luck with your sorting!

Avoid the pressed-wood furniture. Heavy, cheap and problematic. I do still have a leather couch from them that's holding up decently.

I've never been in an Ikea store, or bought any of their stuff online. It's always a huge deal when one opens up around here - traffic jams, etc. If there's one in Las Vegas, maybe we'll go see what it's all about this winter.

I have never bought a thing from IKEA except their meatballs which didn't thrill me!!

Take my word--one day you will say "The Hell with this" and throw everything out you have not used in the last 3 years from computer parts to clothes to books, etc.

I believe you -- the business equipment is the hard part.
