I'm going to guess that yes, there will be a State of the Union speech made before both houses of Congress, because I don't think that's the fight the Democrats want to have. They will stand aside and let Donald have his baby way. I imagine the clapping hands on one side of the room will be utterly still.
Multiple huge protests are being organized, naturally. A little while ago a huge mass of federal workers were just occupying the Senate office building. That is just the start. I'm waiting for MoveOn to send me more and more text messages on this.
I suppose it is not possible for House members to invite citizens to take their place in the SOTU hall, for example; or this would be a good thing to do; if only every Democrat in Congress traded places with some unpaid government worker, or SNAP recipient, or DACA person, or the entire Coast Guard -- so Donald would have to give his speech to them instead. (When I think about the Coast Guard not being paid, I would like to see their speedboats surge up the Potomac River, the boats leaping over buildings, James Bond-style, to splash down into the nearest body of water to the White House, then leap again and land in one of the fountains on the White House lawn, and ... um, the occupants then disembark peacefully to protest quietly with nice signs.)
** Whoops maybe I spoke too soon... might not be a speech after all... Good!
