Sotu

I'm going to guess that yes, there will be a State of the Union speech made before both houses of Congress, because I don't think that's the fight the Democrats want to have. They will stand aside and let Donald have his baby way. I imagine the clapping hands on one side of the room will be utterly still.

Multiple huge protests are being organized, naturally. A little while ago a huge mass of federal workers were just occupying the Senate office building. That is just the start. I'm waiting for MoveOn to send me more and more text messages on this.

I suppose it is not possible for House members to invite citizens to take their place in the SOTU hall, for example; or this would be a good thing to do; if only every Democrat in Congress traded places with some unpaid government worker, or SNAP recipient, or DACA person, or the entire Coast Guard -- so Donald would have to give his speech to them instead. (When I think about the Coast Guard not being paid, I would like to see their speedboats surge up the Potomac River, the boats leaping over buildings, James Bond-style, to splash down into the nearest body of water to the White House, then leap again and land in one of the fountains on the White House lawn, and ... um, the occupants then disembark peacefully to protest quietly with nice signs.)

** Whoops maybe I spoke too soon... might not be a speech after all... Good!

Sometimes I feel like Rip Van Winkle - one day I realized everyone was throwing around acronyms like SOTU and POTUS and FLOTUS and WOTUS and many more. I must have been asleep when those because everyday terminology.

Pelosi needs to continue to stand firm. If she gives in on this, he will expect her to give in any time. According to the letters in my paper, people are angry at her firm stand. But it is necessary and after all this is Oklahoma so the anger might not be universal.

Since writing this I now think it would have been a terrible move for her to concede. This is about more than the shutdown, more than the speech, it's about the power of the co-equal branches of government, which he's been shoving around. This country is in bad shape and there should be a fight. There is no need for the president to be appeased as far as the budget continuance goes; the Republicans can act without him and someone should demonstrate that to them. Grr. Sorry that you live in a politically challenging area, it must be hard.

Pelosi is saying NO! He will still hold it--probably to one of his 'groups' so they will cheer and he can say thousands were there.

Yes, he might hold one of his stupid rallies. I was sort of hoping he'd show up to the House chamber ..and Nancy would have the doors locked and the power shut off.
