In health columns, they’re disrespecting smoothies now, so I took a look at the one I drink every day and have been re-evaluating it. The health columns I read have thrown into question whether you get the same benefits from greens and fruits/vegetables when they’re pulverized before you consume them.
Some people are saying that having a smoothie changes what you eat later in the day (and many people tend to feel less full, and consume more sugar, etc.). I’m not concerned about that; you can change that yourself. I want to know if blenderizing everything makes me absorb fewer nutrients. I need all those vitamins and stuff.
At least one doctor said that you don’t get the full benefit of the nutrition when you drink it instead of chewing it. I still am not clear on why, but others didn’t agree… So I don’t know. I decided to try for a week to eat my smoothie instead of drinking it. It won’t tell me anything, of course, but if it gives me more vitamins, that would be good.
So for breakfast I had a bowl full of raw spinach, with about a half-cup of grapes and some walnuts on top. This is the main body of what I put in my Nutribullet mixer, along with some frozen/fresh fruit like blueberries, banana, pear. I thought I’d blend just the frozen fruit part with a little water and drink that, since I can’t easily eat frozen fruit. In fact, I had to partially thaw it to blend it.
The bowl of spinach-plus was so dry and unappealing I let myself have a little olive oil and cider vinegar on it. It was good and not at all weird to eat in the morning, once I took a bite. Maybe it won't seem so good tomorrow, though.
Mainly it gave me a chance to look at my diet again, since I stopped losing weight. I have to work harder.
from the same fruits and vegetables. I love Spinach and mushroom
omelets for breakfast.
