Stephen King is sending me psychic messages, I think. It was a few days ago I was reading online and the political columns suddenly reminded me of the old King novel called The Dead Zone. There is a character in it who is a salesman out in the country and eventually goes into politics, aiming to become president. He’s spent years working to surround himself with a security force of thugs, mainly motorcycle gang members. This security force makes a special thing out of suppressing troublemakers at the candidate’s speeches and rallies.
His — Stillson’s — fans and supporters are the same demographic as those most strongly supporting Trump.
The things they say about their candidate, Greg Stillson, are the same things Trump’s supporters say about Trump. I thought the similarities were striking, since he’s loud, inappropriate, outrageous, very funny, and very talkative. And he’s menacing. The hero of the book is bent on stopping him from becoming president.
I went looking for Stephen King’s Twitter feed to see if he’d had Trump-related remarks on there lately. Sure enough, two days ago, he mentions this Dead Zone character and is calling it Donald Trump. "He Who Must Not Be Named" is Trump, to S.K. (Dead Zone become both a movie, then a TV series. Martin Sheen played the character in the movie version.)
