Shoes & Boots

Let's see, I finally was able to catch up on some bills, and then went to the store to finally use gift cards for shoes. My bunions are so bad I have to wear extra wide shoes so the seams stay clear of all my foot bones, so I go to maybe 2 stores that carry wide widths.

I was looking for the exact same New Balance walking athletic shoe that I own now, and I found it -- if you believe the number printed on the tongue -- but the version they're selling now is a trifle smaller, and the material is a little flimsier and cheaper. But of course the price is higher.

So I found a different(better) NB shoe, and then I discovered Bogs boots. I have been looking for something for rain and snow. These are so comfortable I wanted to weep, because I'm just not used to boot-shopping not involving actual foot pain. These boots kind of look like they are worn by futuristic policemen, with black neoprene uppers and a rubber shoe part. There were hardly any in the store so I decided to get a 2nd pair online.

It's a lesson I am trying to remember: When you find something really good in the way of shoes (or other problem needs) get more than one. Because you know it won't be there when you need it again.

I too need a wide toe box and haven't been able to find wide widths in shoe stores for years. I solved the problem by shopping on line -- Shoebuy.com is a good source for almost any brand and no charge for returns. You could also try Amazon.

Interesting: they own Clothesbuy.com too.

I've never heard of Shoebuy. I will have to take a look. And come to think of it, that's a great domain name, with the keyword "buy" coming second.

I have the same problem and find wide widths much more comfortable
but it is compounded by having to have wide calf boots, and I love
boots.

I may have boots somewhere -- nah.

My favorite style of boots was the one with a straight back, like riding boots and, like you, the calf was too narrow for me (dancer's syndrome) so they never worked for me. Don't wear them down here, haven't bought a pair since leaving New York. I miss dressing New York style. Ed solved his problem by appearing in court as a guardian, so he gets to wear suits. He's happy as a clam.

I love them too, but the ones I really liked, when I was living in New York, were also too narrow in the calf for this dancer's legs.

Yep, same here, so I just can't expect to fit the pretty ones at all. I will admit to buying men's shoes when it comes to athletic shoes, since the women's sizes are just too small & narrow. And sometimes boots...

When I was younger, I wondered why my mother always bought double things, and she said 'in case they stop making it.' Sure enough, I've come to see the wisdom in that. Now my goal is to not outlive these must-haves.

You've suddenly made me think of an Agatha Christie passage, where Miss Marple mentions the unfortunate change in the quality of linens since the war. Actually thinking about that helps -- I guess items must discontinue, manufacturing processes have to update and change, and companies frequently have to die.

Snow, boots, snow boots, etc. Very foreign terms to us in Fort Lauderdale--we will be having a 'cold spell' starting late Friday--that means highs of only in the 70s!!!

Yeah, yeah. And my friend in the tropics told me he's de-icing his air conditioner. You guys and your latitudes.
