I really like Apple and understand why some people become "fanboys" and all that. My first-generation and second-generation Apple devices still get lots and lots of use. Every night I take my ipod touch with me for music while I walk. However, when I tried to take a picture of the frog who's out on the sidewalk again, found it's useless for nighttime photos.
I misplaced my remote for my Apple TV, which made me unable to watch anything on TV (except DVDs. I don't have cable or satellite either) unless I watch on computer; but my friend Mike reminded me I can turn any of my other things -- iphone, ipod touch, or ipad -- into a remote control to replace it. So I loaded the "Remote" app onto an old iphone, and was able to control shows on TV. It's weird and a little touchy, but is easier to use in one way: It's bluetooth, so I don't actually have to point it at the TV to use it. (Found the original remote later.)
I haven't bought anything new for some time. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to use what I have to create a video for youtube, with a separate soundtrack. If only I were 16 years old I'm sure I'd know exactly how -- like MacGyver with a phone and an empty soup can or something. All these kids know everything, they learn so fast about the latest electronics and how to use them.
