Joe Paterno, the Bishop of Football

While the rest of the country has been subjected to the scandal of Herman Cain's harrassment beeswax, here in Pittsburgh it's all been football-at-Penn-State scandals.

It has been sucking up the news all day here, the arrest of former Penn State assistant coach Sandusky, for raping children. Because Joe Paterno knew about it for 9 years -- actually was told by an eyewitness, a member of the athletic staff -- it makes this at least as bad as the stuff the Catholic Church has been sued again and again about. Maybe worse. I don't know if there are eyewitnesses to any of the priest cases.

And now Paterno is fired, along with the president of Penn State. It almost looked like they weren't going to be. All the students chanting in support of their coach, etc. It's kind of sickening. Even though I don't share the absolute mania for prosecution of child molesters that a large part of the American public has, I am disgusted Joe Paterno knew this thing and allowed the man to stay on campus for the last 9 years. All it did was change their career paths: Apparently Joe hoped that Sandusky would succeed him when he, Joe, was ready to retire. It may have been a relief to him, in hindsight, that Sandusky retired before him. Paterno probably realized it's not quite the thing, to have a child molester succeed you and carry your legacy.

This is probably why that old man hadn't retired yet, was still head coach at age 82 or so.

Really, football games versus child rape? And people had differing opinions on which was more important? Yuck.

Some things that happened right away, too, reminded me of the ancient practice in Egypt of destroying all statues that depicted the former pharoah after he'd been deposed:
