My Unhappy New Year Muse

New year's eve the 4 of us went to a party at a family's house that DH knows through karate. I thought it was for karate people, and therefore I just might know (and like) a few of the people there.

Nope. Didn't know ANYONE! The woman of the house recognized me as DS's mom, but I didn't recognize her. DS quickly made friends and was off playing. DD and I sat in the living room and played with the toys.

Toys, toys, everywhere! There are 3 kids in the family, ranging from 1 to 8ish years old.

I've never seen a house so completely taken over by the kids. At the front door, there is a diaper change table, mostly covering the door that I assume is to the garage. You walk through the dinning room to get to the kitchen/living room. There is a giant play kitchen in the dinning room, and the dinning room table is pushed to the side, and there is STUFF everywhere! Toys, junk, etc. And a bird cage with 7 finches. I spent some time with them. :)

The living room is full of toys, and a HUGE TV. There's a toy storage thing with open bins, then a big bin of toys on the floor, then more toys on the floor. And 3 child-sized arm chairs! And stuff all over the fireplace mantle, covering their wedding picture.

The kitchen was similar with stuff all over the counters, lots of papers, in tall stacks that I'm surprised didn't fall over.

Then you go upstairs, and there's an open room ("great room") also full of toys and another TV. And about 4 or 5 more toy storage units of various types.

I was so bored. The only people that talked to me were the hosts - asking if I wanted a drink. I ended up sitting upstairs in the toy room for awhile, even though my kids weren't there. I might have talked to people, but they obviously all knew either other, and were from the same neighborhood. It's hard to start talking in that situation! DH hardly talked to anyone either.

At least the food was good. It was a pot luck and there were some great dishes - chicken with herbs, cheese stuffed hot peppers, spinach dip, yum.

Ah, a silver lining--food! I'm going to a party Friday. Don't want to, but for the food!

The food was almost worth the boredom.
