Put DD to bed on Sunday night with a temp of 39.7. She refused Tylenol (upset herself so much that she threw up the one pill I got into her).
At 4:20am, she had a seizure. Called HealthLink to talk to a nurse. The seizure only lasted 20 seconds or so, but then she was nearly non-responsive for 15 minutes. She could understand what you said to her, but couldn't talk or sit up. Healthlink nurse asked a few questions, then said hang up now and call 911.
My first ever 911 call.
The local fire department arrived first. Two very cute guys. By this time, DD was able to talk again, and was upset that there were men in her room (rolleyes).
Then 2 EMS arrived (not as cute), and firefighters left. EMS wanted her to take Tylenol and have a bath to bring down her temp. She refused. We talked and pleaded and ordered, but she would not drink more than a few sips of juice laced with liquid Tylenol. After about 40 ridiculous minutes, they put her in the ambulance at took her to the local rural hospital (which DH requested, GRR!)
Many hours and tests later, I rode in the ambulance with her to the Children's Hospital, where we should have gone in the first place. GRRR! My first ever ambulance ride. The seat on the side is very uncomfortable. The EMS was cute though. :)
Oh the boredom of waiting for test results and doctors! But all the people we encountered were wonderful - firefighters, EMS, nurses, doctors. Several of them mentioned her attitude... Not in a bad way, interestingly... One doctor said she should be a Supreme Court Judge! OMG! That doctor didn't know what to make of her!
They did all sorts of tests and checked her out thoroughly, but could find nothing wrong. The concern was she is too old at 7 to have a febrile seizure. Thank dog they didn't do the PET scan or lumbar puncture that was mentioned a few times! Putting in the IV and taking blood once was bad enough. And her temp was down to near normal, and she was behaving normally, so after nearly 12 hours from the seizure, we got to go home.
We could have skipped the whole hospital scene if she had just taken the Tylenol from EMS at home, then had a bath.
She picked out a new Tylenol flavor from the drug store, and ice cream, and ate 2 bubblegum flavored pills mashed into the ice cream before bed. No fever in the morning, refused to take more Tylenol (crap!), so she went to school!
Thank dog that is OVER! But now she seems to be getting a cold - which is probably the reason for the fever.
