Boot Camp

What was I thinking? Having recently lost almost reached my goal for loosing 30 lbs. I realized that my arms and legs needed a work out.
I was at the Expat Expo and I saw three people wearing boot camp T shirts. I asked them what it was and they said that it was a very good exercise regime. Exercise being on my mind I said, where I sign up. They told me to come to the Eternity exercise studio and try out a free class.

I selected kick boxing and ouch, afterwards I could hardly walk for two days afterwards and forget about moving my arms. Every time I lifted my coffee cup to my mouth my arms were shaking, the saggy skin waving like a flag in the wind.

Really out of shape, I could not do the 30 push ups- I managed one, nor the 50 squats or the abs exercise. The punching was lots of fun however.
I met a really nice couple from L.A. They lived in Russia for the last 5 years and started kick boxing there. They were in really good shape.

There was a young French guy who was in about the same shape as me. My partner was a young Chinese woman who had been kick boxing for 1 year and she could really kick ass. She was very patient with me.

After the class I enrolled into the Boot Camp program, nothing could hurt more than the kickboxing, or so I thought.

We met at the park at 7:30 this morning, jogged up and down stairs, did push ups, sit ups, ran up and down more stairs, did leg exercises.
Squats (what is it with these instructors and their squats) at one point I slowed down and the instructor asked me if I had a knee injury.
I explained to him that I had 57 year old knees and that they had been in use for the entire time.

After the boot camp I realized that I had to go to work. October 1st is National Day. The week is called Golden week. We have to work Saturday and Sunday and then we have the entire week off to go shopping, traveling and relaxing.

I am sooo glad that Eternity is closed for the week. I will practice and hopefully be in better shape the week after.

As Benjamin Franklin said, "Everything in moderation." The wish to get into shape is admirable, but rushing it, especially at OUR age, can do more harm than good!

I remember my first couple of weeks of Army basic trainingAfter getting over the initial shock of having to get up at 4:30a and all the exercise that followed I was able to get into a routine...so to speakI don't think at 50 I have that capability anymore..yup

More power to you! I don't agree with Jeri (elderjane). The most recent information is that jogging, etc. is GOOD for your knees! Squat away.

You made me laugh out loud in several places reading this.

Congratulations on your successful weight control program. My wife has us on the South Beach Diet, which is quite labor intensive, and we have lost 10 lbs in about 1-2 months, and exercising more. Take care

I get to see the knee doc again on Monday. I had been doing Ok for a few years, but I think it's time for another injection. I prefer worthwhile exercise, so I've been cutting and splitting logs. I had a break yesterday and today due to rain, but I was exhausted after a few days... but it felt good! And I'm not finished yet! I should try a few push ups... I'll bet my arms could handle it now! Exercise is good at our age, enjoy!

Cisca, be careful with those squats. They are very hard on the knees and having had two knee replacements, I can say that surgery is the worst. My orthopedic physician said that squatting and jumping should be avoided.
