Thanksgiving Detente

This year our Thanksgiving celebration was a bit unusual in that there were very few Americans at our house even though 3 of our friends flew in from the States and with cranberries.

Our first year in China I went to many strangers on the street and asked them if they were American if they said yes, I would invite them to dinner on Thanksgiving.
Over the years we have found a nice group of friends from all over the world, many of whom wanted to learn about the Thanksgiving holiday.
This year we invited about 40 friends over for Turkey, Ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, salad, creamed spinach, macaroni and cheese, stuffing and way to many desserts, including the traditional pumpkin pie.
Our friends took it upon themselves to invite more friends and we had 70 people over to share the food and a good time.
How amazing to meet people from France, Holland, Namimbia, Barbedos, Kenya, China, Spain Belgium, Croatia and of course the US, who all shared a passion for turkey! As we stood in a circle expressing our thanks I felt very thankful for this experience.

For many people it was the first time celebrating Thanksgiving, I hope we set the standard for many more  Thanksgiving celebrations in their lives.
I can still remember our first Thanksgiving in Shanghai, our cousins came with suitcases full of turkey, ham, macaroni, cheese, onions, herbs, sweet potatoes, garlic, and pumkin pie filling they even brought eggs not knowing what they would find here.
The cousins unpacked everything for me to cook, while they went shopping, I guess they did not want to return with empty suitcases!
We invited some Chinese friends who expressed amazement at the big chicken on our table, before picking up slices with chopsticks.
Regardless of who comes and what you eat and how it is eaten, to share the day with others is the true blessing.
