Two weeks ago I was at a luncheon with about 14 women, a welcome lunch for new comers to Shanghai. We were enjoying lunch when one of the women mentioned that she had few Olympic tickets for sale for the track and field finals.

One of the new comers, decided she just had to have the tickets. She then phoned her husband and told him that she had this opportunity to get tickets at 800 RMB apiece. A little over $100. ( I can remember when that was exactly $100). Her husband told her no, that was too much money. Besides the tickets she would still have to pay for airplane tickets to Beijing and a hotel room.

With a crestfallen face she told us that she could not get the tickets. So there was my opportunity to get tickets. Learning from this young lady, I phoned my husband and said “darling I got us tickets to the Olympics for our anniversary”

What could he say? The young lady overheard the conversation and her mouth
fell open.

She said to me “how long have you been married?” I said next week will be 33 years. I asked her the same question and she said 9 months.

I ran into her the following Monday and she said, you know I really learned something from you last Saturday. Had I told him it was a gift I would be going to the Olympics instead of you!
