Where's Stewie?

There was a fatal roll-over accident on one of our busy back roads on August 18, and ever since everyone in the area has been on the lookout for Stewie, the miniature dachshund who was in that car. He ran off when his owner's SUV rolled and caught on fire. It is an area of open farm fields between two towns, and people saw him a couple of times but were unable to catch him.

The county animal control people patrolled the area and volunteers searched every day. Someone brought a bloodhound that was able to pick up some of Stewie's scent one time, but couldn't pick it up again on subsequent days. There is a live trap in that area in case Stewie would come around.

Finally, in today's newspaper it was announced that the search for Stewie is being called off because he hasn't turned up. Everyone's pretty sure that he's been eaten by coyotes. They say the scent that they picked up might have been when he was very frightened, and then he got eaten, and that explains why there was no sign of him after that.

But we are all hoping that he found a good new home with people who don't realize someone is looking for him.

coyotes and mountain lions devour cats and dogs all of the time. Maybe
someone swooped him up and took him home. I hope so.

They've sort of stopped looking for him, but I think we'll all keep an eye out when we drive on that road for a long time to come.

We even went and looked for him one day. Sometimes animals have to do it their way, and it's frustrating for us that despite our best efforts we can't change their fate.

Our coyotes and mountain lions would make short work of him.
