Tbend 10, Mice 2

The score keeping idea comes from Tealstar - her husband Jay kept a mouse tally.

Here is the latest on the mouse situation here.

I caught 12 mice in the first live trap I bought. It was a light-weight thing, and I had a feeling they were able to escape it because I was catching one every few minutes before I went to bed but it would be empty in the morning when I got up and checked it.

Next I bought a better trap, a Victor Tin Cat Repeating Live Trap. It can hold 30 mice, according to the label.

They go in that square hole you see on the end (there is one on the other end) and a little spring-loaded ramp arrangement inside keeps them inside. It's the county jail of mouse traps.

The first night it was in my kitchen it didn't catch any mice, so I put it in the garage. No mice there, either. Someone had told me that after you catch some mice in one spot, you don't catch any more for awhile, so maybe I caught all the ones I had for now.

Last night I put the trap next door at the empty guest cabin. The mouse guests over there have been exploring everywhere - on the beds, on the kitchen counters, inside the kitchen drawers at a minimum. I expected to find several of them inside that trap this morning, but there was only one quiet little mouse.

To dispose of all these mice, I am carrying whichever trap onto the bridge and emptying the occupant(s) into the river. One of the early mice landed on the edge of the bridge and got away and since it was dark night out, I didn't see for sure that all the ones hitting the water floated completely away.

This morning the subdued mouse hit the water and started swimming. The current wasn't very strong, and he was able to actually swim to the shore and I could see him pulling out of the water into the tall grass. I just hope that by the time he gets back into the house he'll have forgotten that the Tin Cat is a trap and rush right back in so we can have a repeat swimming meet starting in the middle of the river, not so close to the edge.

I can hardly believe there was just that one mouse next door so far, and am looking forward to what I'm going to find there tomorrow.

Had more mice up north in the city (we had a restaurant on the ground floor and holey walls) ... haven't seen a one here. Our problem is bugs. Love to kill those suckers.

It's hard to think a bug is cute and feel bad about killing it. I'm so fed up with these mice I don't think they are cute any more.

You are much nicer than I am. I caught a mouse in a snap trap this week in the garage, and fed it to a very happy cat. (The mouse was very dead). There seems to be at least one more mouse in the garage, but this one is a bit smarter so I haven't caught it yet.

Even if my cat was here, I couldn't trust him to eat even a dead mouse, but I am hoping to one day be able to release a mouse right in front of the fox so he can catch and eat it.

Mousy cam would creep me out, knowing that the little devils were in my house. All right, I already know they are in my house, but I don' t have to watch them having parties. I guess I need to move my traps. Haven't caught any for three days and I was catching one a day for several days. Maybe they are gone. Wishful thinking. Peanut butter for my bait too.

I was all about 'out of sight out of mind' as to the mice, too, but then I couldn't ignore it any more. I'm so pleased to find a trapping solution that I can live with.

I had the same question as Martin. What attracts them to the "mouse jail"?

Peanut butter. The stores sell a non-poisonous gel that I suspect has more staying power.

My buddy relocates coons and skunks, he's getting rather experienced at it. One large coon got out of the trap last summer and sat on the dashboard of the van staring at my buddy. But the coon left when the door was opened. Some of the coons now have orange spots on their backs but none has been able to return "home". Happy hunting!

We have a live trap up in the garage that could accommodate those larger animals, but I would have to be very motivated to go through with all that. If the squirrels in the attic problem gets any worse, I might get that motivated.

I have the same exact mouse house! They work great. However, I have no river to dump them into. Neighbor's woods.

I made duct tape tabs on the lid and base so I have a better grip holding it out over the water. I have visions of opening it to see a whole bunch of mice and struggling to get them out of there cleanly.

Okay, city boy here--do you put cheese or something else to get them into trap? Well come on--I don't know!

Peanut butter! The label says no bait required, so last night I left it baitless, and we'll see if that worked. Can't believe there was just the one mouse over there.

Oh kool! You got a mousy cam.

I'm trying to decide if a true mouse cam would be fun to have or just creepy. It's a thought, anyway.
