Pumpkins, Really Big Ones

Every fall the conservatory at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas gussies up with pumpkins.

They post the weights because of course you would want to know.

1000 pounds:

I would love to take home five or six of the winter squashes arranged around this big bruiser:

Sometimes they have these woodsy creatures:

There is a fancy bakery near there. Here is how Hello Kitty does Halloween.

I sent this next picture to my cousins in England (the one who knits toys for me) and the husband, Trevor, wanted to know which one was the pumpkin. Ha, ha.

I loved the woodland creature. I need it to be my familiar this Halloween.
Rex is not scary enough.

Someone sent me a photo of a dog Rex's size spray painted (with safe paint, I'm sure) to look like a tiger. We used to have a large white cat and I wanted to make her look like a Dalmation by painting on dry cocoa spots, but Mr. YouKnow didn't think it was a good idea.

I can't believe how fast these photos uploaded! I'm amazed. We have these big pumpkins all over Indiana.

Ground zero for oversized produce = Indiana.

My feeling is that pumpkins are supposed to be orange. Those white ones are creepy.

I'm with you on that.

As far as pumpkins lasting, remember the weather here is a lot warmer and that is no doubt a factor.

Sometimes we put them out on our doorstep and they freeze and thaw. I don't know how much of that they can take before they start to droop.

I bought a pumpkin a few years ago and put it in our entryway for decor and it looked fine for a long time and finally I noticed it was getting droopy and when I went to get rid of it, it was a soggy mess and not easy to clear away at all. Lesson learned.

Sometimes I think today's pumpkins don't last as long as they used to. Maybe it depends on how they are handled in shipping and storage.

I *think* they do a lot of the giant stuff in Alaska where they get 18 hours of sunlight. Not as warm, but light seems to be the key.

Up here, I could plant it in a wheelbarrow and move it around during the day to follow the light. Later, I would have to transplant it to the skidsteer bucket.

There was a guy around here a few years back who had a giant pumpkin in the back of his pickup. The thing was so large (and misshapen under its own weight) that it looked like it had been grown right there in the truck.

I was thinking about what it would be like to raise a giant pumpkin, but I can't grow regular size ones at this altitude.

That wooden face is scary!

That's what lives in our forests - the moment we turn our back the tree people appear.

I keep on hearing about a shortage of pumpkins but our supermarkets are loaded with them!!

I assume you told your cousin he is disinherited!

His big fat son was here last year and I took a picture of him next to one of them and sent it to the parents.
