Spring is Really Here

I saw the first hummingbird of the season this morning and jumped up to stir up some juice for the feeder and get it hung outside.

And this evening, there were two birds, so there will be more and more of them every day from here on. Spring has sprung. Last year the first birds showed up in April, so they are running late this year. Don't ask me why. They migrate from Mexico, and I don't know how long it takes them to cover the distance. Maybe they take it in stages, spending several days or a week in Arizona or New Mexico before pushing north to spend the summer here.

The weather is warming up and I did a little gardening today: planted some shallot sets and spinach seeds. My lettuces are just breaking through the ground.

I remember how they swirled around your feeders and I have a special spot
for these little birds.

The males make that shrill noise with their wings when they fly, and last year it was almost deafening out there around the feeders.

Don't you just love hummingbirds? I have a feeder at my home and one at work. The hummers appeared here about two weeks ago. A sure sign of spring.

What I like most about them is how tame they are. We'll be out in the woods and one will fly up to say hello.

Well Spring is sort of here. But we still have cool weather and also the frost is not completely over for us till June.

Still frosty here, too. These short growing seasons really put a crimp in the vegetable growing efforts around here.

Lettuce poking through the ground or snow? We had frost yest. morning. Will Spring ever arrive? It's May, for heavens sake!

Looks like the lettuce waited for the warmer weather to get with the program. Maybe it'll grow fast now.

The Monarch butterflies will be migrating back from Mexico if they haven't already. They always fly right through western Oklahoma City and it is quite a visual treat to see them.

That would be really special. We get a few of them here, but it's not a beautiful sight like you describe, only one or two at a time.

I'm jealous. I fully intend to start a garden this year, even if I'm a little late.

Not too late to pick up a tomato plant and one of those hanging planters for it, just a little project to get your feet wet, and next spring when the house is done, you can really get into it in a big way.

Hey, they may have stopped off in Vegas!

Might have.
