Sombrero Ranch Horse Drive

Every year the Sombrero Ranch folk move their 500 dude ranch horses 62 miles from land leased from the Bureau of Land Management to summer pasture near Craig, Colorado. The horses take riders up into Rocky Mountain National Park.

Good-looking palominos.

Unlike the movie "City Slickers" they don't bring along just anybody, but do invite about 30 guest riders with good horse skills to help.

Not everyone makes the whole trip, but if they make it 'gate to gate' they are given the cherished and well-deserved belt buckle.

It's better when they don't get all California on us.

I only rode once or twice. I went up when the horse went down, then we met in the middle. Ouch.

That's what happened to me.

When my wife and I were first dating, her family had horses and one day she took me out for a ride. I'll have to post that story for everyone's general amusement.

Looking forward to it.

You can get sore all over from riding but I love it and miss having horses.
We had thoroughbreds and Appaloosas for riding.

Horses are such beautiful animals. Friends of ours had Paints, and they had such a funny look on their faces, like clowns of the horse world.

WOW!! thats a lot of horses we have more camels than horses in the country , more than Arabia , watched a movie based on true advents awhile back, when the U S cavalry changed from horses to tanks etc, Douglas Mc arthur ordered that all horses be shot owing to lack of money to feed them , after seeing 100 horses machined gunned , their handlers drove the remaining 400 odd to Canada to save thier lives.
they thought as serving members of the armed forced they deserved a better retirement .

We still have controversies about how the federal govt wants to deal with the wild horses out here in the west.

My daDDy sez 'Dugout' Doug MacArthur was a ass-wipe who din't care how many troops he got killed, so the horses meant nuthing to him anyway.

I used to ride a bit in my late teens. It was wonderful!

My dad never thought much of horses when we growing up - too expensive, too high maintenance. It's funny, though, because he had horses when he was a kid, and his dad raised Percherons to sell to the circus. Maybe he learned too much about them to want to deal with them as an adult.

Loved my days riding and caring for horses! What a treat making this trip would be.... Of course, I'd have to have a h-u-g-e backpack with me filled with apples and carrots for every horse....

They never have an article about how the horses get back to the pasture in the fall. They might load them in trucks, but that doesn't sound like as much fun.

Horses are some of the most majestic animals--and mush to my shame I have never ridden one!!!

I never got good enough at it for it to be a smooth ride, and I couldn't tell you if it is ever a smooth ride. I don't know if those cowboys in the John Ford movies, galloping for miles below the Tonto Rim had their bits shaken and pummeled, or there is some trick to it.

I rode English saddle as a teen and loved it. I can ride Western if I have to. I would make this trip, even today. Isn't it just like riding a bike? Yeah, I know, I'd be sore at day's end. Have you ever done it?
comment by tealstar on May 30, 2013 10:11 AM ()
Oh, not me. I have cousins who were real cowboys out there on horseback driving the cows. A lot of muscles get used riding a horse - those cowboys probably have tremendous core strength.
