The Skid Steer

Skid loaders or skid-steer loaders are typically four-wheel drive vehicles with the left-side drive wheels independent of the right-side drive wheels. By having each side independent of the other, wheel speed and direction of rotation of the wheels determine the direction the loader will turn.

Skid steer loaders are capable of zero-radius, "pirouette" turning, which makes them extremely maneuverable and valuable for applications that require a compact, agile loader.g.

The most recognizable brand of skid steer vehicle is the Bobcat. They are good for yard and driveway work because they have a very tight turning radius, not so good for anything on your lawn, because the skidding digs into the turf.

Our skid steer is a Ford that we bought used from a guy in this area for $5,000, including a trailer for it. A used one usually costs $15,000 - $20,000 so we got a good deal on it, especially considering how little we use it. It's cute because wherever it has the Ford name, someone painted "Henry" in front of it. So I guess its name is Henry.

We use it to spread gravel on our 1/4 mile of driveway and for shoveling snow, so don't fire it up very frequently, but it's a life-saver when we need it. I like it a lot because I can turn it around on the narrow, steep, hanging over the river driveway when I'm working up there.

The other day we got it started and took it for a spin around the yard to make sure the hydraulics are still good, just in case I might need it in the months ahead.

I'm with Jeri. Chainsaws are my limit. And pickups. Besides, I'm always on drugs and I'm not allowed to drive heavy machinery.

Heavy machinery careening down the incline with dazed Randy behind the controls.

Cool! I want a skid steer.

Once in a while Ed will ask me to do a guy thing with him, and I answer that if he wanted a wife who could do that sort of thing, he should have gone down to the Longshoreman's Union or some such, and picked one up there. Of course, at that time, I didn't know about YOU.

You are amazing! I don't do heavy machinery or chainsaws. They intimidate me.

It is so empowering to be able to solve a problem with power tools. They intimidate me, too, but by the time I have to resort to one of them, I'm out of other options.

drove one of them bobcats many moons ago they were used for cleaning out hulls of ships after unloading coal --salt etc -- the turn on their own axis and great in confined spaces .
once loading wheat from silo into a ship they lowed one down onto the top of pile attached to a wire so it wouldn't get lost and i had the job of levelling it out --very scary at first wore red overalls just in case i got buried

Drowning in grain is a risk, you must have been glad when that job was finished.

Henry is lookin' good! Say, I thought of you guys following news of the wildfire near Boulder, though I know that's not near you, but are you all having a drought in your area?
comment by marta on Sept 7, 2010 10:55 PM ()
The fire is south of here, not real far, but far enough. We are always in a drought. Even if we have a rainy spell, a few warm days and low humidity puts us into extreme fire danger, so the fire could be here just as easily. As fires go it's really, really bad.

"Henry" looks like fun.

Really is fun. I wish I was more skilled with gravel work. Snow is easier to work with.
