What Size Was the Hail?

I was reading about today's killer tornadoes in Oklahoma City and saw a reference to 'lemon size hail.'

I found this list of names used for the various sizes of hailstones.
Name/Diameter (inches)

Pea .25 inch
Marble .50
Dime/Penny .75
Nickel .88
Quarter 1.00
Half Dollar 1.25
Walnut 1.50
Golf Ball 1.75
Lemon 2.00
Tennis Ball 2.50
Baseball 2.75
Tea Cup 3.00
Grapefruit 4.00

Here in Colorado once we get past the nickel and dime stage, it seems to go from 'golf ball' to 'tennis ball.'

I'm so glad you are back from your vacation to Italy. Vacation? Every day is vacation for Fredo, right?

That's a great one. I'd love to see it in a news report.

We have had hail during a hurricane but it has been awhile since we have had one--hurricane season starts next Wednesday--I'm keeping my fingers crossed especially with all this crazy weather happening.

The farmers here just dread the summer hail storms beating the grain off the barley and wheat, stripping the corn, and it's so spotty - demolishes one field and skips the one across the road.

We had only a little hail and it was mostly dime size.

I'm glad I have a garage. When my father was in the car business, we'd have to scramble to move his new cars indoors when hale was forecast.

We've got three cars here this summer because Mr. Youknow and I drove separately, and only one garage space. The hail here doesn't get past pea or marble, but we're still going to worry about the cars.

Mostly pea- and marble-sized hail here in Northwest Ohio, but the little buggers can cause some real damage when wind-whipped off Lake Erie.

Come summer (if summer ever comes) we'll be on alert to run out and spread bed sheets over the vegetables and flowers when the big storms come in.

When I lived in Chicago and then New York, I never had to know about hail, except what we had was a pea, if that. Not until we moved to Florida did I become aware of natural disasters on the current scale and all over the country. Was I living a charmed life?
comment by tealstar on May 25, 2011 4:07 AM ()
I'm not sure if that's a charmed life because there are other excitements in the city, most of them man-made, that we country folk never dream of.
