Can't Win - Electric Bills

The electric company in Las Vegas has gotten yet another rate increase approved, expected to add $5.24 a month to the average bill. One reason was millions to support energy saving programs like better insulation for low-income folks, and the other millions were because the electric company is getting less revenue due to people conserving on energy.

In other words, the more we conserve to save money, the more it's going to cost us anyway. Apparently, no matter how many people including teachers and public employees get laid off or take pay cuts, the privately-owned utility companies are entitled to a set amount of huge profit and their employees are entitled to continue to draw huge salaries.

On a cheerier note, Mr. Troutbend was able to do some work on the furnace ducts at the guest cabin next door. Some of them weren't connected at all, so the dirt blowing into the house, according to him, was falling off the tops of the ductwork into the airflow. There was a lot of ductwork he couldn't reach, but he could see a lot of it, and there weren't any more of the big gaps.

Today we're waiting for the rain to start falling, and I need to heat up some lunch - homemade bean soup and some lovely red rice left from last night's dinner.

Lack of intra-state competition is a major problem, as non anti-trust policies have allowed electric companies in every state to consolidate until they can get any rate they want and customers have to pay. Here in Ohio, the coal fired electric companies have taken virtually all the market, leaving the green energy companies struggling. But we can sign up and choose our power supplier, and I have chosen a consolidation of companies that include the largest green producers. In my opinion, the anti-trust suits are waaaaay overdue, but not likely to gain any traction with Republicans.

Disgusting. My water bill was 82.00 due to the leak we h ad but it won't
do any good to complain.

Since a higher water bill is usually a symptom of a water leak, the utility company probably figures you were lucky it was high, leading you to the leak. Except I know that's not what led you to the leak.

One of the better benefits I get living here at Gateway is that our electric is included in our rent and in Florida that is a major plus.
We also have the same situation with FPL here and recently out new Republican governor has set the FPL watchguard with fellow Republicans--yep, republicans don't believe in raising taxes but fees is anotehr story!
