Saturday Mail Service

Today in Las Vegas, retired postal workers picketed to protest the plan to move to five-day mail delivery. I suppose this has something to do with the postal workers union wanting their members to make the maximum salaries. Personally, I could live without Saturday delivery if that is what the postal service needs to survive. Yes, it's nice to be able to receive and mail Netflix DVDs on Saturdays, but I'm willing to make the sacrifice. Actually, I have a feeling even if they do go through with this plan the USPS will still cry poor and make additional cutbacks in service over the next few years.

Other news from Sin City:

An 11 year-old child shot his 5 year-old nephew in the head with a gun he found in a box of toys. The children were visiting the home of a family friend and were sent down to the basement playroom to play with the toys. Five other guns found around the house were confiscated but nobody was arrested.

A 16 year-old Kingman, Arizona boy died from a gunshot wound to the head incurred while playing Russian Roulette. The gun was brought to the home by one of his little underage friends.

A 63 year-old man was jailed after he told the police he injected a 45 year-old woman with a fatal dose of heroin. It was $70 of heroin that she brought to his trailer house, and she had never used heroin before. Toxicology tests showed she had methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin in her system when she died.

Another story is about two murderers who were able to plead guilty to lesser charges just before their jury trial for killing a stranger in the common area of an apartment complex. Long story short, they fired guns at a couple of guys, one of whom was a stranger to them.

He ran from them bent over, and the bullets hit him in the buttocks, but traveled through his body to his heart, killing him.

Meanwhile, here at the ranch:

Glad you're in the company of those beautiful golden aspens and not in Vegas with the gun toting loonies.

No kidding! The electricians told me I could carry my Ruger if I have it in plain sight in the car, so I brought to Las Vegas with me in case of home invasion. Like Pogo said: "We have met the enemy and he is us."

I think Illinois is the only state that doesn't allow carrying concealed weapons. Is that what it is called? I don't know anyone who owns a handgun.

To listen to people around here talk, I can say I don't know anyone who *doesn't* own a handgun.

Morons shouldn't be allowed to own or even touch firearms, but the NRA says "NO. WE HAVE THE RIGHT!" So I guess they have admitted that they are morons.

It has gotten to where we all need a gun so we can defend ourselves against the people who have them. I'm thinking of taking mine in the car with me when I drive across country.

Guns in the hands of idiots and kids and drug dealers are apalling. I
attribute it to the violence they see constantly on tv. Our young people
are dressing like hookers but as G. M. said, "Mother Nature is doing her job".

That toy thing is just mind-boggling, and the poor 11 year-old: he and his nephew were best friends. Parents need to teach kids that even toy guns shouldn't be pointed at people. One of the gun stores in Las Vegas has free gun safety courses for kids over 5 years old, and hopefully their parents don't just drop them off at the door, but sit in on it and learn something.
