Resolutions

A couple of years ago I promised myself that if something bugged me, I'd fix it. For example, if the screen door didn't close properly, I'd make my husband fix it. If a favorite pan in the kitchen was hard to get to, I'd rearrange the cupboards to make more sense. If it was hard to find something in the garage, we'd build some shelves and get more organized. You get the idea.

I have arrived at this point with one of my vacuum cleaners. Today, I was trying to clean our smaller rental cabin and got all sweaty wrestling around a vacuum cleaner that my father-in-law pulled out of someone's trash, made sure it worked as best he could, and gave me. The height adjustment won't stay set, and the machine itself is heavy and clunky. I'd thought I would like it because it has a feather duster type thing that has its own storage compartment, and you turn a knob, and the vacuum sucks the dust off of it. But it's some strange synthetic, like a darnell wig, that doesn't attract and hold dust, just rearranges it in place. So, mark it on my calendar: today is the last time I'm going to use that vacuum cleaner.

That particular cabin is hard to keep clean because it is rough logs inside and out. Spiders and bugs get in where there are gaps.

It's a cute little place, and we don't charge much per night for it, but it doesn't get a lot of business.

Some of this is probably due to the lack of cell phone and internet access there, and some is due to our No Pets policy. We've got two reservations for it this summer, and that's okay, it will cover some of the electricity cost, which is $16 a month even if nobody stays there. I do the laundry there because the clothes washer there has a removable lint filter that can be cleaned out, so it keeps lint from getting into my septic systems.

I think I have that same vacuum. The little round cover won't stay shut on my duster part so the air suction is weak. It got really loud all of a sudden too. I need a new vacuum but I haven't had this one for very long. I still think when you buy something, it should last forever.

I was noticing how noisy it is, too. The most irritating is the height adjustment won't stay put. I like the bagless feature. I don't know if the trash man would take it, and I don't know if I should donate something I don't think works very well.

Looks cute and quite rustic!

Every day I go over there looking for bugs that have gotten in through the gaps, and that's what I tell myself: it's rustic.

After much online research, once we decided we needed a vacuum that really SUCKED, we bought a Shark and I'm happy with it. For whatever that's worth...

That's the brand of the vacuum I just bought, and having found it, all the other vacuums here pale in comparison. One of my favorite things is how the switch can be used to turn the brush off and on.

We have a Miehle -- it has super suction -- the cleaning people who have used it love it. It's good for animal hair which is why we bought it.

I'm extra partial to red cabins.

I always picture an artist or writer staying there for a couple of weeks as a get away and get some work done.

"Some of this is probably due to the lack of cell phone and internet access there"---I would think that would be a selling point for people on vacation to get away from it all--we just LOVE our gadgets!!!

Some people say they are glad to get away from cell phone signals, but I notice they use the wireless we provide to continue sending text messages.

I love the enamel top table. They are so twenties! My aunt had one. The
cabin is really cute and rustic looking, just perfect for the setting.

That's my favorite, too. It's got a little silverware drawer on one side. I think the curtain fabric is the same as my mother had in her kitchen when I was growing up. I bought it on eBay, and keep squinting at old pictures to try and figure out if it's the same (the curtains are always closed in the photos).

Great! I also have an enamel-top pull-out leaf table (two leaves). It has a white top with black designs and is signed "Montanari." I've been offered heavy cash for it but I'm keeping it. It is the perfect table for pie-crust making.

Poor man's marble slab, that's how I think of it.

Vacuuming the floors is something I rarely do. I just wait for when I can get a cleaning person. I now use Carolina and am planning to set up a permanent, every month cleaning with her. She is very thorough. A blessing. Once a crew selling vacuums going door to door asked me how often I vacuumed. Without shame, I said, "I think at least once a year." They were stunned I had the guts to say that. That little cabin is awfully cute. Go now and buy a new vacuum.

Last night I figured out that I can buy a vacuum for that cabin to use for the rest of the summer, then send it to Las Vegas for the winter to use there.

Looks great inside as far as internet etc goes there is satellite tv and phone just need s setting up but can be expensive.
let the moths out and buy a new vacumn cleaner

The satellite TV is all set up, and included in my home account. Last year I decided it was nuts to keep a phone in there if nobody ever rented the place. They'll just have to jog down the road to our place or find a place where they can get a signal.
