I Remember Lydia

I'm sure you love the song Lydia The Tattooed Lady as much as I do. (Smile) I was reminded of it today (see bottom of this post). I first heard it in that Robin Williams/Jeff Bridges movie "The Fisher King."

Oh Lydia, oh Lydia, say, have you met Lydia?
Lydia The Tattooed Lady.
She has eyes that folks adore so,
and a torso even more so.
Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia.
Oh Lydia The Queen of Tattoo.
On her back is The Battle of Waterloo.
Beside it, The Wreck of the Hesperus too.
And proudly above waves the red, white, and blue.
You can learn a lot from Lydia!

La-la-la...la-la-la.
La-la-la...la-la-la.

When her robe is unfurled she will show you the world,
if you step up and tell her where.
For a dime you can see Kankakee or Paree,
or Washington crossing The Delaware.

La-la-la...la-la-la.
La-la-la...la-la-la.

Oh Lydia, oh Lydia, say, have you met Lydia?
Lydia The Tattooed Lady.
When her muscles start relaxin',
up the hill comes Andrew Jackson.
Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia.
Oh Lydia The Queen of them all.
For two bits she will do a mazurka in jazz,
with a view of Niagara that nobody has.
And on a clear day you can see Alcatraz.
You can learn a lot from Lydia!

La-la-la...la-la-la.
La-la-la...la-la-la.

Come along and see Buffalo Bill with his lasso.
Just a little classic by Mendel Picasso.
Here is Captain Spaulding exploring the Amazon.
Here's Godiva, but with her pajamas on.

La-la-la...la-la-la.
La-la-la...la-la-la.

Here is Grover Whelan unveilin' The Trilon.
Over on the west coast we have Treasure Isle-on.
Here's Nijinsky a-doin' the rhumba.
Here's her social security numba.

La-la-la...la-la-la.
La-la-la...la-la-la.

Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia.
Oh Lydia The Champ of them all.
She once swept an Admiral clear off his feet.
The ships on her hips made his heart skip a beat.
And now the old boy's in command of the fleet,
for he went and married Lydia!

I said Lydia...
(He said Lydia...)
They said Lydia...
We said Lydia, la, la!

Here is what brought it to mind:

"Libya? I remember Lydia, but I don't remember a Libya." -- From David Letterman's Top Ten Thoughts That Went Through Herman Cain's Mind During The "Libya" Moment

It is an amazing and inventive song. Groucho is missed. I wonder what
the Marx brothers would have thought of movies today.

I guess they'd be the voices for animated movies, since that seems to be so much the thing lately.

I liked Groucho Marx- all of the Marx brothers as a young girl, but I do not remember this song.

It seems like I've only seen a couple of their movies over and over through the years. I don't know if I've ever seen the one this song was in.

Yes, I remember Groucho's rendition. It went on far too long, but there was much to say/sing.

You're right - the later versions were probably shorter.

Thanks for the words. Always enjoyed Groucho's rendition.

Oh, you're so welcome. I hope you are having a good day and feeling good. I was going to say 'chipper' but I don't think you're old enough to have that applied to you.

I saw/heard Groucho do it in the original movie--was it "Animal Crackers"?
comment by greatmartin on Nov 17, 2011 7:48 AM ()
According to Wikipedia, it was in "At the Circus."

There is a Russian woman named Lydia who comes to my zumba class and I always sing the first two lines of that song to her. That is all I remember. Thanks for the lyrics.
comment by boots586 on Nov 17, 2011 7:31 AM ()
Yes, now you can add a few more lines. I hope she enjoys it.

I loved the movie The Fisher King. I listened to the song - funny!

That was such a great movie, surprising when I finally saw it.

Herman Cain has a 'mind?'

I think of him as the Sarah Palin of the next election, but aimed at a different demographic.
