This Oughta Be Good

Project: Surprise

I pronounce it the French way: Pro-zhay Soo-preeeze.

Next door, at the Brown Palace there is a large screened porch with a painted floor.

It's in pretty bad shape and I decided to paint it, but I don't trust myself to do a good job. However, knowing that first the old paints needs to be scraped off, I decided I can do that and then Mr. Troutbend can help me with the painting.

The floor boards are pine and they were varnished at one time, and then painted over with brown paint. The crunchy stuff is the removed paint and varnish.

I'm using an electric heat gun to soften the paint and varnish. It's a large area, the size of a one-car garage, and I was afraid it was going to take forever to get done, but it goes pretty fast. All told I think it will come to 9 hours, spread over several days.

There is big furniture out there, and I can't move it out by myself, so I did one half of the porch floor and then moved it to the other half.

Here is the soo-preeze: I will tell Mr. Troutbend that I want to repaint the porch floor, and he'll say "there's a lot to it - it will need the old paint removed." So we'll go look at it, and Surprise! the old paint is already off! Surprise!

But the surprise has been dampened because I had to ask him to bring his electric sander from Las Vegas and he asked me what kind of sanding I want to do. Apparently he has several types of sanding devices. I told him floor sanding, but just where will be a surprise. He'll probably guess where, but he won't expect it to be ready to sand right away.

I'm with the others. The natural color of the wood would be a nice change after years of being hidden under paint. I'm sure it will be beautiful when you finish.

I have to see what happens when he takes the belt sander to it because the underlying varnish left gummy clumps that may or may not sand off. I might have to go over those spots again with the heat gun. I'm going to put special feet on all the furniture that's out there, might even sell a large oak train station bench that takes up a lot of room.

I think it would be so pretty natural and finished with something like
polyurethane that would protect it. You did a great job!!

The old finish was such a mess it didn't matter if someone scratched it dragging a chair across the porch, but now we'll count every scratch. I think a thick coat of polyurethane might be more scratch resistant.

Why don't you just varnish it after you get it sanded. It looks as though the wood is still in good shape. It would be lovely its natural color.

I think those grayish areas can be sanded away. Once it is sanded, my suggestion would be a redwood stain followed by a water sealer. That can all be put on with a paint gun and takes very little time. It will look just like a deck and the furniture won't mar it.

I was thinking about somehow showing the natural wood - it's not perfect - there are some grayish spots from the brown paint, but they give it character. Have to decide what's not going to show scratches from people dragging furniture around on it.

Better still, stain it and then seal it. It would be gorgeous.

How can you mess up painting a floor? Unless, of course, you paint yourself into a corner.
comment by nittineedles on May 13, 2012 10:00 PM ()
Footprints in the paint, not getting up all the dirt in the corners, painting over old loose paint, not holding the paint brush right , uneven coats. And not using a primer. And dropping a loaded paint brush in the dirt, and then painting it onto the floor. These are all the things that Mr. YouKnow is just sure I am going to do on any paint job. He hates to see me paint, so it's like Tom Sawyer painting that fence: I start, and he takes over. And the color - I don't want to be responsible for choosing it all by myself.

Wonderwoman at work! And no smelly chemical paint remover required!

This heat gun is amazing. I may find some other paint that needs stripped off.

After all these years, there isn't much that would surprise him, so it's a big day when I think of some little thing.

We have just a short time before the summer guests start coming, so that will motivate us to get it done fast.

Working with my hands got my brain working, and I remembered all kinds of things from the past - old boyfriends, old times. It was almost as entertaining as dreaming to see what would pop into my mind next.
