Private Eyes

I read a lot of mystery stories, and right now I'm listening to a Sue Grafton novel in the form of an audio book on my iPod. I used to like Sue Grafton a lot, but she wore me out - every book we hear about Ms. Kinsey's life - her cozy converted-garage apartment, her 88 year-old landlord Henry Pitt who is a retired baker, and designs crossword puzzles. Nothing ever changes with her. How long is that Henry going to live? And how long is wrinkle-resistant black dress she keeps wadded up in the backseat of her VW bug going to hold up?

Anyhow, I got to thinking about these fictional people who are self-employed as private detectives. So many times their clients don't have much money, can barely scrape together the first day's fees and expenses, but the good-hearted private eye gets caught up in the case and never mind the money, they throw themselves into it and risk life and limb in the name of justice.

This particular Sue Grafton is "U is for Undertow" - the last one I read was "F is for Fugitive" so you can see that I've taken quite a breather. It's not horrible, I'll enjoy this one and take another break.

No comment about the author, never read her work, but you've made me curious about audio books again. I have a wonderful CD of Eudora Welty reading her short stories. Thanks for reminding me.

You're very welcome! There is a list of legally free download sites at this URL:

https://blogs.publishersweekly.com/blogs/genreville/?p=995

I downloaded a couple of books from Librevox, but the books are read by volunteers, and each chapter is a different person. At each chapter change you have to listen to them tell you it's librevox and who the reader is, kind of like pop-up ads on the Internet. Plus, their accents are not always easy to understand.

Hope you find a perfect solution for you!

Surprising, isn't it, what gets this bunch going.

I grew up listening to Spike Jones. Very funny. Check him out on YouTube.

I read those The Cat Who... books for awhile. But they got to be too "formula writing" for me after a while. Many of the prolific authors end up doing that. I still follow the Sue Grafton series. At least they don't come out every month, so you do get a break between each book. I also read the Janet Evanovich (sp?) books - One for the Money... she's up to #17 now. It's very similar to Sue Grafton. With more hot guys in it.

Sorry. I meant Crazylife, not Crazylegs. I have no knowledge of your legs and their mental state.

Number 18 coming out in November. Eventually Stephanie is going to have to choose one of those hot guys. I choose Joe. Crazylegs, who do you like?

"Laura" is a wonderful movie. From the 40s,I think. Clifton Webb, maybe, too.
I loved "The Help", Elderjane. Haven't seen the movie yet. Heard it was good.
I read lots of mysteries, mostly what are called cozies. Not so violent. Female protagonists.

I'm working my way through my thousands of paperbacks, saving a few to read again, but many of them are donated to the library book sale.

Hobbes wants to write a mystery pet novel titled, "A Is Fer 'ARF.'"

I read all The Cat Who books. The authors run out of ideas and just recycle plots.

Did you ever read those "Cat Who..." books? I liked the first few, but then it got out of hand. I think some of these authors run out of ideas, and since their name sells books, their editors stop paying attention so they start turning out junk.

I goofed...your reply is above.

I saw that movie twice and loved every last bit of it. Gene Tierney was
so beautiful and exotic looking. Let's don't do G Gone. There are too
few readable books out there.

The book that the movie was based on was written by Vera Caspary. I had another of her novels: "Evie" but can't remember what it was about.

I like Jonathon Kellerman and Elizabeth George best of all the mystery
writers.

Have you read any of the Janet Evanovich books about Stephanie Plum?
reply by boots586 on Oct 2, 2011 12:58 PM ()
Listening to this Undertow book, I realize that I have outgrown Sue Grafton.

I am on U is For Undertow right now but I took a break and started
reading, The Help and can't put it down.
comment by elderjane on Oct 1, 2011 3:05 AM ()
The advantage of reading a book instead of listening to it is you can whiz through the tedious parts, such as her issues with her family, I'm finding that aspect of the story really boring. I read The Help twice - finished it, went back to page one, and read it again. I loved it.

AJ (lunarhunk) has read most of her books---I use to be into mysteries/detective stories but I don't remember the last one I read!

I don't like most of the newer authors/books - they have a giddy and hysterical tone.

"Laura"with Tierney,Andrew,Price this was one of my favorites.
Where am I going with this?Laura as alway think of the movie.
Never read any of Sue Grafton novella. How about G.gone.

That's a good movie. Spike Jones and the City Slickers does a parody of that song.
