Pineapple Express

Remember my previous post Where Does Your Weather Come From?

Well, judging by what's going on here, you'd better hope your next weather doesn't come from Las Vegas. We are still getting pelted by the rain that's been wreaking havoc in California, and the weathermen are calling it the Pineapple Express because it came from Hawaii, or at least that general direction.

It's been rainy for more than a week here, and right now rain is pelting down. We don't have a flat roof, fortunately, because those people really have problems in this kind of weather. It's usually so dry in Las Vegas if they have a leaky roof it doesn't matter until a day like today, and they have to get out there with blue tarps and try to cover the bad spots and drain the water out of their light fixtures inside the house.

The Virgin River (yes, it's an ironic name for something so close to Sin City) is flooding and houses in Littlefield on the Beaver Dam Wash near Mesquite are being washed away, sailing downriver towards Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam.

Don't worry about our friend Steve (looserobes) in Utah. I checked with him and they are getting a lot of rain, but no snow as yet. He isn't in a river valley, so no worries there, either. Zion National Park where he goes hiking is closed in several areas due to the flooding. I think it'd be fun to see the water pouring down from those slot canyons, but not if the next thing to wash away was my car.

Sho' nuff, that storm clobbered them back east. You must be getting some snow out of the current one that's on the edge of the Rockies tonight.

It is dry as a bone here. I wish we had some but feel so sorry for those
who lost everything.

Not only did their house wash away, but also the land it was on. Those are retirement communities, so maybe some of them are second homes.

My God, what can one say?

Even the cat was depressed. The sun finally came out today, I'd forgotten what it looked like.

Such strange weather for Nevada. So sad that homes are washing away, especially right here at Christmas. I'm sure none of them have flood insurance. Who would have thought they would ever need it.

A few people have experienced floods in the years past, so they do have flood insurance, but the ones that washed down the river are in newer developments and there weren't any near misses to warn people this could happen, so they didn't have the insurance.

The rain is just been torrential in California, and as it moves east, I share your concern for all those losing property and all they own. A monster storm! Stay safe!

I wanted to go out in the desert and find one of those usually-dry washes to see what it looks like with water in it, but we didn't get around to it, plus the danger.

The movie was terrible and did not finished watching it.

I got the feeling it was aimed at people in the movie industry who were supposed to think all the inside jokes about making a movie were hilarious.

Whoah! That's real crazy... I have been to Zion, I liked it!

We grew up out here in the west, finally got to Zion, couldn't believe what a beautiful place it is.

Damn, here I go again.I thought that you were talking about the movie.

That movie got a lot more credit than it deserved.

We occasionally get the Pineapple Express. It just makes it rain harder here.
comment by nittineedles on Dec 22, 2010 9:51 AM ()
You'd feel right at home here today and the past week. It rains, then it rains harder, then it rains some more.

Very devastating to lose your home to a natural disaster. We cross our fingers every hurricane season.
comment by tealstar on Dec 22, 2010 9:03 AM ()
This isn't a very hazardous area, so we're not used to this kind of disaster. I'll bet those people never thought they'd need flood insurance.
