Pictures

I don't have any new pictures. Usually, I take several a week but lately I haven't been in the mood. Right now, both my camera batteries are charging or I'd go out and take a snap of the newly-seeded grass on the bank outside our dining room.

We are being hounded by biting flies. The bear was here the other night, pulled down all the hummingbird feeders and sugar water went everywhere. That attracted the flies and they are everywhere even after we hosed everything down. There are hundreds of what look like baby houseflies, but they might be a different species that only reaches that size.

Because of the bear, we have been taking the feeders in at night. This morning I put them out at 5:15, and there was a half-eaten dog biscuit outside the back door. I went back to bed to read for a bit, and later we discovered that some animal had come and pulled down one of the feeders and taken that dog biscuit. We can't imagine who would have pulled down just that one feeder.

The other day I took a pastels class, supposedly in the impressionistic style. According to the instructor, this meant using colors with the same value (relative darkness or lightness) next to each other, and we spent 15 minutes experimenting with one color next to another and looking at the result through red plastic to cancel out the color so we could see just the value of it.

Next, we were supposed to apply dabs of those colors on the paper, being sure to put unexpected colors in a given area so that when we stepped back, a red dab next to a blue dab would appear to blend into a purple dab.

It was fun putting out colors, but I can't draw, so my picture ending up coming from my imagination instead of the photograph I was supposed to be drawing from.

Mostly, it was fun to get out of the house for a few hours for something not related to flood recovery, and after the class, Mr. Troutbend treated me to the steak nicest dinner in years. Mind you, it was nothing fancy, but compared to the usual no-so-great Chinese buffet that he usually chooses, it was special.

March flies true to name are bigger than blow flies and you certainly know when they bite, one month of the year you wear long sleeves.

I'll be glad when these flies are frozen out by the weather and we are back to just house flies.

I used to do a lot of sketching and painting in my teens and 20s. No talent. I just enjoyed doing it. Now my knitting/designing is my creative outlet.

I decided that not every quilter does the entire project, they delegate the quilting to someone else. That means it's okay for to use whatever means to transfer the drawing to the canvas and then I can enjoy working with the colors of paint.

This year our issue isn't insects, it's critters. Not sure if it's chipmunks or groundhogs, but something is devouring the zucchini plants. They don't eat the flowers, but without leaves, the plants don't have much of a chance. The coonhound knows there's something living in the woodpile and that probably the enemy, but he can't get at it. Not worse than flies, tho.

Our chipmunks scold from inside the woodpile. I don't know if I've ever seen them eat garden vegetables and flowers, but the golden mantle ground squirrels certainly do. They look like a chipmunk only bigger, and don't have the same stripes on their faces.

We have those very tiny black flies that aim for the eyes!!! What pests!!

I'm trying to remember if one of the few advantages of wind is that it discourages flies. I can't remember if it does or not.

I continue to worry about you, Eloise and Gary where the hungry bear is
concerned. I know that you have dealt with wild life all of your life
but it still worries me.

It is kind of worrisome. The driveway lights went on the other evening and while I was walking out there to see what set them off, I kept wondering what I would do if it was the bear down there.

Yes, it is fun to get out and I am glad that you are exploring your creative side.

I kept thinking about how talented you are, Dottie. It would have been fun to have you next to me for inspiration.

Would be tempted to post a motion camera to see who's messin' with ya. I used to love to draw and paint, and there was this course I wrote about a couple of years ago in the local park. But I am not hardworking any more. I do have a project in mind and I don't get to it because I keep forgetting. The teacher I had gave us a color exercise that was so tedious I didn't do it. I suppose there is merit in painting a thousand small dabs of paint, each varying just a little from the previous. It's supposed to get you so familiar with color that you can plan your painting. Well, I am the classic non-planner. Seat of the pants is my thing. In New York, 1,000 years ago, I attended art class at the School of Visual Arts. I will dig up one project and post a photo if I don't forget. It is the first and last time I was meticulous according to a teacher's plan. I was very successful with this piece. But I never want to do anything like it again.

It was a horrible picture and I threw it away because looking at it gets in the way of moving on. I'm thinking of it as a study.

I hope you do post it. Would love to see it.

You should post a picture of your picture. and man, those animals really mess with you hey?
comment by kristilyn3 on July 20, 2014 7:18 PM ()
I hated that picture so much I threw it away. But it was valuable for the getting out of the house to do something different. People 6 miles down the highway from here keep seeing a bear around, and I wish that was our bear, but am afraid there are probably at least two of them.

Elk? Nah. They would take the biscuit but not the bird feeder.

We have a picture of an elk drinking out of a hummingbird feeder.
reply by troutbend on July 21, 2014 8:39 PM ()
Maybe an antler took out the bird feeder.
