Tour De Flood

This week I spent two long days on bus tours to look at flood damage and what has been done to repair it, including planting new vegetation. Day one was really hot and we were at low altitude. Day two was high-altitude and there was a big rain storm, but the scenery was fantastic.

Up in Rocky Mountain National Park:

This is the West Alluvial Fan campground at Rocky Mountain National Park. You can see just the top of the sign. All that material, 10 or 15 feet deep, came down during the September flooding, and totally cut off that campground.

This is where Old St. Vrain Road washed out along the St. Vrain River, near Lyons, Colorado. In the foreground you can see a bit of the road, and then it takes up again across the river.

You seem to have gotten yourself a new career -- does Mr. T involve himself as well? The scenery, despite the damage, is still beautiful.

He goes to some of the meetings, but I don't like it when he does because he's always wanting to leave when the formal part is over, and I miss out on getting to talk to people offline and eavesdrop on casual discussions. Of course, it's nice that we spend the time getting to and from the meeting together since we have so little time over the course of a year.

It is always beautiful in the park.

It made me appreciate my own home more because I realized what I have here is just as much of a treasure as what is preserved in the national park.

They had free food at the end of the day. Everyone brought their own lunch, and it was interesting to see what they brought - not just sandwiches these days, plenty of salads.

The scars of that flood will be long in healing.

That alluvial fan area is a flood story that goes back decades and there are major changes every few years. The park people debated leaving that campground cut off, but have decided to do what it takes to open it again. And it will take a long time to heal our minds.

One of the canyon residents said she was looking for a publisher for a children's book she has written about the flood. I told her about a Christian publishing house near us, and she said last she heard, they publish materials to be used in Sunday schools. I suggested that she remind them some of the weather people have referred to this flood as 'Biblical.' That should get her in the door.
