The Old Garage

This two-car garage was built in 1915 by my great uncle, who built the house I live in a summer cabin around that same time.

I have never seen a car in it. When I was a kid my dad filled it up with firewood, thinking it was important to have dry wood. Later he emptied it out and used it for a mail-order business that sold bulk used postage stamps to collectors and middle-men who sold to collectors. He had that business for about ten years until he sold it.

Next, he built shelves and used it to display his farm toy collection and old tools he bought at auctions.

This is a drill press that he restored. It is fun to crank it, but it doesn't serve much purpose.

So, do you still have the collection of farm toys? I'll bet they are worth a bunch of money if you do.

Our crawl space is filled with stuff from late spouses and their late spouses before we knew them going back to the 1800s. Someone's going to have a ball one day after we're gone.

My dad collected those farm toys by going to auctions and after he died we had to auction them off so my sister could get her share of 'the money.'

I agree with elderjane -- how fun it would be to explore the garage and find so many antiques! You could really make a killing selling some of those items on ebay...just a suggestion.

There's lots to look at in that garage, that's for sure, although it's different stuff now - all those in the photos were sold in 2003.

The old farm toys are extremely valuable as I am sure you know. How I would love to explore the old garage.

He spent about $12,000 on his collection and we got about $4000 at auction in 2003.

The models are a savings account! You should get them appraised, as a collection.

They're gone. I kept only a few items that we played with when we were kids.
