Paean to a Pan

Snowy here the other day, nice here today.

I don't know if you can see him, but the male hummingbird is sheltering on a twig near the ground next to the chimney.

Well, take my word for it, he's there somewhere. Anyway, you get an idea of where he hung out all day.

We got about two inches of snow, but the next day the wind came up and evaporated most of it without giving the soil the benefit of the melt.

Here is a baking pan that I inherited. I like it a lot because grease doens't bake onto it, so it is always shiny.

Another reason this pan is special is all the scratches and dents in it that are the result of wonderful baked things being cut in the pan. If you look closely at the upper side, you can see little dents at regular intervals where the knife cut into the metal while cutting brownies or maybe chocolate sheet cake into serving pieces.

Cabin fever does strange things to a person, but I was already unique.

Love the photos as always!
I also have something I cherish, tho it wouldn't mean anything to
anyone else--my dear friend, dead these 22 years, wrote out all the
two letter Scrabble words on paper for easy reference when we would
have these marathon Scrabble days.I framed them and they are precious
to me, to see her handwriting and coffee spots on the edges.

If the bird is right in the corner, I think I see it -- a little brownish-red smudge. I am taking your word for it that it is a boy bird. I have a little metal box that I keep rubber bands in. It is scarred and I taped the lid so it wouldn't fall off. It was one of the many items of almost junk that Jay never got rid of. Old things are the heart of history. I think of him when I open the kitchen drawer and see the box. I want to say, see? a part of who you were is always with me.

No, I don' see the humming bird either. My mom used to have one, but it only came out in the summer. Don't know where it was in the winter. Nice pan! I don't have one... guess because I don't bake. I buy great cakes and cookies, though.

So, you are back in beautiful Colorado now, I take it.That pan conjurs up pictures of delicious treats. My mouth is watering as I visualize all the wonderful things it has contained.

cool pics, Laura. I have a cookie sheet like that. Dented and scorched but many tasty, comforting treats came to life on its surface and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
