Mythbusters; Public Restrooms

Okay, I don't know if you will admit to watching Mythbusters, but I just saw an episode that answered some questions I was really interested in. As usual, it's fun to see how the testing was done.

Public restroom hand dryers vs paper towels.

Do those air dryers blow germs onto your hands? Do they blow germs all over the rest room?

Conclusion: Yes to both. There were more germs on the hands and area around where the air dryer was used (sides of the dryer, floor, walls).

Which bathroom stall is used the most often (men's room), and which has the fewest germs?

The least used stall out of four was the first one, and second least used was the one at the far end. The most used was the second one. They did exit interviews, and the men who agreed to be filmed said they liked the second stall and the fourth one because it was a little more private.

The germiest followed with the frequency of use.

I know, it's a tacky subject, but now we know.

eiw. I had heard the stall theory before and try to use the first one when I am thinking about it..

The casinos have those great big restrooms with many, many stalls, and I've often wondered which is the least popular.

I've been wondering about this for years and now I know. xoxo

One of life's great mysteries laid to rest. My other favorite was where they disproved the 30 Second Rule: germs just jump onto anything that hits the floor right away.

I don't get why dryers cause more germ problems. Some restrooms rely on them and have no paper. Maybe I'll just carry my own paper towels. Now that everything I do is by car, why not?

I gathered it was all the blowing around, forcing whatever residue of germiness left on the hands into the air. Where the restroom door opened inward via a handle and no paper towels available to use like a pot holder on the handle, I've seen people wait patiently for someone to push the door open from the outside so they could leave without touching anything.

Time to get rid of all those electric dryer fans in the rest rooms. Maybe we have to get rid of the 2nd and 4th stalls, too...

Have you seen the Dyson Air Blade? Our Sam's Club installed them, and they are more efficient and the air doesn't go everywhere, but that's not the model tested by Mythbusters.

Geez, and I thought I was down & dirty with my post on cat puke...

I knew you'd want to know this, it'd be a shame to keep it quiet.

I hate those blow dryers. I usually end up waving my hands in the air
which is probably just as germy.
comment by elderjane on May 17, 2013 3:57 AM ()
I wonder if those new Dyson Blade dryers are better. At least the air from them is more contained.

would like to be paid to do these type of studies
comment by kevinshere on May 17, 2013 12:42 AM ()
It was kind of nasty because the study participants had their hands sprayed with a strain of e coli that a lab said was safe (but still germy) and then they washed and dried them. I couldn't have done it, but they were young and more open minded.

I once did a story on restrooms--they are dens of inequity is all I will say here.

When Mythbusters does that particular investigation (I'm trying to think of what the myth would be), I'll probably watch something else.
