Marmot

The yellow-bellied marmot is a member of the squirrel family that around here lives in rocky areas at high altitude. If you drive up Trail Ridge Road (highest continuous road in the country), you'll see lots of marmots sunning themselves on the rocks.

Today, I discovered we have our very own marmot living in the woodpile. He was up on top sunning himself today. He's a very good-sized animal, probably weighs about 30 pounds.

I don't know enough about these animals. As far as I can tell, they come out of their burrow to gather dandelions and cow parsley and other vegetation to eat, and spend a lot of time basking in the sun.

But what else? Do they dig up the lawn? Do they seek out garden vegetables? Do they attack people?

And where did this marmot come from? They usually live in colonies, so where is the rest of the family? Did he waddle over the top of the mountain?

I doubt he's going to replace the fox or our friend Quackers the goose in our hearts, but it's something to distract us.

He looks sort of like a woodchuck. Are they related? I don't think I have ever heard of a marmot.

Yes, they are related. Woodchucks are lowland dwellers and marmots live in the high mountains. I had to look this up because this is one animal we never expected to see here. Heck, maybe this is a lowland guy who has strayed up here rather than a highlander who wandered down to this altitude.

Looks like a chipmunk on steroids...

Very much so. My fleeting impression was that it was the size of a beagle on short legs.

If your pic of the woodpile shows a marmot, I didn't see him or her. Awfully cute they are, though.

No, that's what would be known as a stock photo of the woodpile. After the guests leave in a couple of days, we'll have a better opportunity to sit and watch the woodpile.

I think he is cute. I'll bet there are others around. Surely he didn't
make the journey alone.

Cute is as cute does, and time will tell.

could be migrating, but if he stays he had better watch that fox

It'd be nice if he attracted our nice fox back to the area, but my impression was that this marmot was the same size.

Sounds like the good life to me.

Just hope the good life doesn't include burrowing in the lawn and terrorizing humans.

"...to eat, and spend a lot of time basking in the sun." In other words they know how to live!!! Did you google or bing them?

There was an article about what nice pets they make, but that has to start at infancy.
